CHILD PARLEY HEARS HOOVER IN WASHINGTON 3,000 Specialists Are Told of Three-Fold Program of Protection. By t,'nitre! Prr* WASHINGTON. Nov. 20.—Loaders of American child life began action today upon President Hoover’s doctrine that if we had but one generation of ideal childhood a thousand problems of government would vanish. Three thousand specialists gathered at roiyidtables of the White House conference on child health and protection, summoned by President Hoover to outline safeguards and services to childhood by the community, state and nation. Society Is at Bar President Hoover laid before the conference the three-fold duty of protecting the normal, aiding the defective and reducing the delinquent contingents among America's 45,000,000 children. He addressed the first gei.ual session of the three-day conference last night, charging the leaders to “light the fires of public conscience and lead it to action. 1 ’ “Industry must not rob children of their rightfui heritage. It is not the delinquent child that is at the bar of judgment, but society itself.’’ For a moment the President abandoned the formalities of his charge and in the role of a grandfather which he occupies in private life, spoke with warm affection. Children Are Praised “Children are the most wholesome part" of the race —the sweetest, for they are fresher from the hands of God. Whimsical, ingenious, mischievous, w'e live a life of apprehension as to what their opinions may be of us; a life of defense against their terrifying energy; we put them to bed with a sense of relief and lingering of devotion. “We envy them the freshness of adventure and discovery of life; we mourn over the disappointments they will meet.” TALKIES IS MODERN HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT Veterans’ Unit Here to Have latest Recreational Facilities. Desserts, Jellies, Canned Fruits, Candies and Cranberry Sauce Are Appropriate Winter diets demand fuel food. To disregard this rule leads to lowered vitality, the result of which is 6ickness. Food that contains, or is served with refined sugar is good fuel food. Cereal, fresh or stewed fruit, jellies, jams, preserves, sweetened beverages and desserts belong to this class and every meal affords an opportunity to serve them. At this time of the year, cranberries in some form are appropri- j ate at any meal. Serve them as a jelly for breakfast; as a sauce with j meats; in puddings and pies for desserts. Business people can avoid and overcome fatigue by eating or drinking something sweet in midafternoon. There is a wide variety of such snacks available everywhere—candy, cakes, beverages and ice cream. A glass of water sweet- ! ened with sugar—the “athlete's cocktail” —will always prove invig- J orating. In eating and drinking these foods and beverages, the sugar is quickly digested and its energy is immediately available. Most foods are more delicious and nourishing with refined sugar.
