GIBBONS TELLS . OF PREMATURE I ARMISTICE DAY Explains on Radio How Roy Howard Wired Report as Authentic. Bv United Preta NEW YORK, Nov. 17.—A vivid ctory of the World's war closing days w?s given by Floyd Gibbons, noted correspondent, in a “World Adventure" talk, Sunday night over th? NBC network. He described the historic armistice conference that took place twelve years ago in the French village of Rethonde, and told in detail of the circumstances which led to the premature report on Nov. 7 that the armistice had been signed. On Nov. 7 my old friend, Roy Howard, then president of the United Press, swung off a train at 8 o'clock in the morning in the French port of Brest," he said. “He wps on his way home after a trip at •the front "As all correspondents credited by the war department had to do, he reported immediately to the American Intelligence bureau in Brest. The officer in charge clapped him on the back and shouted, “Great news; the war is over!” Howard Got Busy
"Howard, like any good reporter, Jumped two feet in the air and beat it for the office of Admiral Wilson, commanding the base at Brest. Admiral Wilson was in charge of all United States naval forces in Trance "Howard, like a good correspondent, was seeking official confirmation of the report before sending it. Admiral Wilson was just handing a bulletin to an orderly. The admiral showed it to Howard, who read as follows: ‘Armistice signed at 9 a. m. Hostilities cease at 11. Americans took Sedan this morning.’ It was dated that morning, Nov. 7, and it was signed by Captain Jackson. naval attache at the United States embassy in Paris. Admiral Wilson said to the orer!y. Take this down and have it read in the public square in French and English and then tell the band master to put some jazz into the music.’ Admiral Wilson explained the official source of the dispatch, and then sent a naval officer to the cable office with Howard to speed up his message." Set off Celebration When the report flashed around the world it sot off a celebration to at lasted for many hours. When it developed that a mistake had occurred in Paris, the source of the message. Howard rushed a correction, but it was held up by American officials until the next day before becoming public, Gibbons said. He also related details of the German arrivals seeking an armistice. He noted that the German delegation spokesman, toe late Mathias Erberger, sought allied terms, but at first did not directly Bsk for an armistice. The French forced Erberger to put a direct appeal for an armistice and then terms were given, with a time limit of seventy-two hours for action. Carol Honors Paris Friends PARIS. This business of people throughout the world regarding Hollywood as a place with sin on every comer and its residents a lawless crowd has gotten on the nerves of the Hollywood City Club. “How Wicked is Hollywood?” the organization asked in a pamphlet issued today and then went on to tell how little crime there is in the movie colony and how misunderstood the minor slips of the famous people who live here. To support its contention that the divorce situation is not nearly as bad as it looks, the club quoted statistical estimates, which may be summarized as follows: The total number of individuals affiliated wtih the acting branch of
