NEW DEMOCRAT SENATORS HAVE VARIEDTALENTS Gifted Orators and Shrewd Lawyers Among Group Just Elected. Ilu Seritivs-TTotcard >ietcioaoer Alliance WASHINGTON. Nov. 9.—Even though the Democrats may not control the senate organization, the personalities and parliamentary proficiency of new members will add greatly to their strength. Not In a long time has either party brought to congress such a collection of able and gifted men as the dozen or more senators elected by the Democrats. The Republicans, for instance, have no speaker who can dress as well or speak as brilliantly as the gallant J. Hamilton Lewis, who defeated Ruth McCormick in Illinois. Underneath his pose the “Colonel,” as he calls himself when in Napoleonic mood, has a peculiar skill at tantalizing opponents. In attire he will outshine even “Hi” Bingham of Connecticut or “Dave” Reed of Pennsylvania. Long Able Lawyer At the other extreme stands Edward P. Costigan, senator-elect from Colorado, and a leading tarrif expert. His knowledge of this question springs not only from study, but also membership on the United States tariff commission. On allied problems Costigan also will rank high with any one on either side of the aisle. He is as solemn and studious an individual as Lewis is flippant and devil-may-care. No senator will equal Marcus Aurelius Coolidge, senator-elect irom Massachusetts, in solemnity of . mien and in bearing a name most lit for a statesman* Moreover, Coolidge is a man of wide and varied business interests, differing sharply Irom his colleague, David I. Walsh, who is the lawyer-in-politics type. Governor Hu*y P. Long of Louisiana, is regarded as one of the most expert railroad rate lawyers in the southeastern states. He has had a training in rough-and-tumble parliamentary and political schools such tas few of his associates have enjoyed. Unlike Ransdell, who often voted with the G. O. P., Long will prove to be an able and aggressive Democrat. Logan Is Picturesque In Robert J. Bulkley, who will represent Ohio in the seventy-sec-ond congress, the Democrats get a combination of lawyer-business men equal to Senator "Tom” Walsh of Montana ir legal ability and experience. Whereas Walsh is the courtroom, jury-swaying lawyer, Bulkley is the inside man in his law firm. * The Walsh-Bulkley firm will have aole assistance from M. M. Logan, Kentucky’s senator-elect who now is a member of the state court. Logan is a picturesque fellow, however, whereas Bulkley is rather retiring and unspectacular. Logan’s legal skill is conceded, however, even by his opponents back home. Thomas I. Gore of Oklahoma, brings previous experience in the senate f"d the gift of eloquence. James x'. Byrnes, who replaces Blease of South Carolina, proved to be one of the Democrats’ soundest and strongest men during his service in the house. RED CROSS SUPPORT IS URGED BY HOOVER Every One Should Help in Annual Member Drive, He Says. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, Nov. 10.—Support of the Red Cross membership drive which opens Tuesday was urged by President Hoover. “It is not charity in the normal sense of the gift without obligation,” said the White House statement. “It is supported by all of us. and the day may come when any of us may have claims upon its assistance or protection.” SANK CLERK SENTENCED Employe Accused of Taking $3,"36 Given Suspended Term. HT Convicted in criminal court Saturday of embezzling $3,736 from the Fletcher Savings and Trust Company, Stanley Scroggs, 23, of 430 Massachusetts avenue, is free today under a suspended prison sentence of two to fourteen years. Scroggs, a clerk, is alleged to have taken the money in small amounts over a period of weeks prior to Sept. 1. Evans Woollen, president of the bank, informed Judge James A. Collins that Scroggs had been a diligent employe. 2 HELD AS - FUGITIVES Prisoners Facing Return to Penal Farm After Escape. Two men were held by detectives today as escaped convicts from the * state penal farm, Futnamville. They are Henry Morrison, alias Marion, 71, and Vernon Hughes, Negro, 1330 South Pershing avenue. Both walked away from a road gang Oct. 10, local police were told. John Wayt, Mooresville. was held ior Hendricks county authorities, who w’ill accuse him of theft of five bee hives from a farmer near Danville, police said. 6,000 PLANTS SHOWN More Than 6,000 Attend Flower Display at Garfield Park. More than 6,000 persons attended the park board’s flower show at Garfield park greenhouse Sunday Sixty thousand plants are on display and the show will continue the icmainder of the week. Dies Suddenly After Dance Funeral arrangements were being completed today for Erwin O. Root, 52. of 431 North Illinois street, who dropped dead at the home of a . friend, at 322 East New York street, * after a dance Saturday night.
