MACDONALD IN DOOD POSITION FOR ELECTIONS Cabinet Defeat Before Christmas Expected to Be Welcomed. BY KEITH JONES United Press Staff Correspondent LONDON, Nov. 7.—The labor government of Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald Is believed today to be In a strong position to meet an expected political crisis and new general elections about Christmas. Possibility that the cabinet will be defeated either shortly before or after Christmas Is growing rtronger daily and the split in the Liberal party, which has been supporting MacDonald, is believed to indicate certain defeat within a comparative short time. Would Welcome Defeat Political sources suggest that the government would welcome a defeat within the next two months, with an opportunity to call new general elections before the conservative party has time to patch up its own internal controversies. This also would give labor party leaders an opportunity to shelve or repress their own “left wing’’ or radical elements which have been a great handicap to the MacDonald government since it assumed power. It is believed that, given a chance to choose the legislation on which It would be defeated, the cabinet would not evade the possibility of being overthrown in connection With the new education bill brought Up in the house of commons Thursday by Sir Charles P. Trevelyan. Second reading of the bill was apprdved. “People Against Peers” The bill raises the age at which children, may leave school to 15 to 14. It would keep some 300,000 children from the labor market in 1831 and permit at least 150,000 older persons to obtain work. It was considered certain the house of lords will reject the bill. Thus, forcing of the Labor government to call new electiqns would permit MacDonald to go to the country with the issues of “Peers vs. People” and gain a wide advantage among the mass of voters who resent interference of the house of lords with legislation already approved by the house of commons Which favors the measure.
