Von For at, Doran Sign Chicago Heavies to Clash at Armory: Wilson Is K. 0. Victor. Otto Von Porat, Chicago Norwegian heavyweight, who has been up and down the fistic ladder, will attempt to demonstrate his knockout punch when he opposes Bud Doran, also of Chicago, in the tenround main event at the Armory next Tuesday night. One punch, a short right to the jaw, ended the feature attraction Tuesday night between Hershie Wilson. Danville, 111., and Joe Rivers, Cedar Rapids. la., in the second round, with the lowan in the resin. There was little action in the first round, Wilson using a left jab and Rivers jumping in for a few body blows. Jackie Purvis, local welter, shaded Bill Hoon, Detroit red-head, but only after a slashing ten-round battle. Most of the rounds were close, with Hoon displaying a clever defense. However, Purvis forced most of the milling and landed the more effective punches. Dick Porter trounced Roy Pferson, local welter, in the top six-rounder, using a strong left hook. Earl Ryder, Cincinnati feather, fought a clever battle to gain the nod over Chick Wanger of Ft. Wayne in six rounds, while Billy Brown, another local welter, rallied to cop a fourround shade win over Carl Schmadel.

Heap Big Irish-Indian Plays Center for N. D.
Tommy Yarr NOTRE DAME. Ind.. Nov. s,—Two years ago there came down to Notre pame a big, broad-shouldered fellow from the town of Chinacum on the plains of northwest Washington state. The lad was Tommy Yarr, one-quarter Indian. His grandmother was a member of the Cheroket Indian tribe in the northwest territory years and years ago. He had plenty of fight, courage and the ability to make friends, but it seemed there was something else, a more impelling power behind him. Sure it was, he possessed the wit of an Irishman. An Irishman, yes, for it was soon discovered that Mr. Yarr, father of the now famous Tommy, was born and reared in Dublin. Ireland Tommy Yarr’s well-balanced proportion of brain and brawn, coupled with his natural and developed ability, have brought him up from the shock troops of 1929 to a permanent position on the first stringers this year, and at such a rapid pace that one is almost astonished. He was given his first real test in the Northwestern game last November when Tim Moynihan, regular center, was removed from the game with a broken leg. , x

Boilermakers and Northwestern Favorites in Conference Contests, but Jinx May Spill Dope; Three League Teams Play Intersectional Games.
By I'nited Pre** CHICAGO, Nov. s.—With three western conference teams invading the Atlantic seaboard to meet eastern foes and three others playing I minor midwestern schools, competition in the Big Ten Saturday will be limited to battles between Northwestern and Indiana and _Purdue and Chicago. And unless you believe in “jinxes” neither game promises real competition. Northwestern, marching toward the Big Ten title, should defeat Indiana, and Purdue is expected ] to have little trouble in piling up a large score against Chicago. Indiana has been a “jinx” oppoI nent for Northwestern under coach Dick Hanley’s regime with the ; Wildcats failing to win a single 1 game from the Hoosiers in Hanley’s three years as coach. In etfery | game, Northwestern was an overwhelming favorite, and each defeat^

knocked the Wildcats out of a chance to win the Big Ten title. Northwestern’s back field has been weakened for the contest by the loss of “Pug” Rentner, key man of the Wildcats offense, but even with Rentner out the Purple has a great back field and a line strong enough to make its running and pass attack effective. Purdue served as a. favorite Chicago victim for many years—at one time losing fifteen consecutive games to the Maroons—but the situation has altered recently and the Boilermakers are getting revenge. Chicago has won twenty-six of the thirty-four games played between the two schools since 1892, frequently defeating supposedly superior Purdue teams. In 1928 the Boilermakers turned in' their first decisive triumph, winning 40 to 0. They repeated last year, 26 to 0.
