CLOSE PENNSY GOVERNOR VOTE IS BEING CAST Entire Country Is Watching Pinchot, Hemphill Ballot as Dry Law Test. BY JOSEPH S. WASNEY Pres* Staff Correspondent PHILADELPHIA. Nov. 4.—Pennsylvania's heated gubernatorial campaign reached a climax today when about 2,000,000 voters went to the polls to decide the bitter race between Gifford Pinchot. Republican and prohibitionist, and John M. Hemphill, Democrat and liberal wet. The entire country keenly is v ;itelling the outcome, as the result will be interpreted by many as a test vote on prohibition. In the state, however, the wet and dry issue was only one of many involved. Skilled political observers felt the final count would be close. For the first time in forty years, control of the Gibraltar state of Republicanism was being threatened by the Democrats. Hemphill, a 39-ycar-old war veteran and lawyer, conducted an unusual and sensational campaign against Pinchot, former Governor, who has been active in political life for many years. The campaigns of both gubernatorial candidates were closed with charges from both camps of treachery and conspiracy to steal votes. State Senator Samuel Salus asserted that Mayor Mackey of Philadelphia, and Mayor Kline of Pittsburgh, intended to manipulate the count so as to defeat Hemphill. Pinchot forces indicated that some ballot boxes would be impounded so as to assure a fair count. CHAPLIN’S CHILDREN GET LESS EXPENSIVE Spent Nearly $5,000 Less Last Year Than Year Before.
