WEALTHY TEXAN BUYS SHARE IN MOVIEMMPANY ‘Hell’s Engels’ Producer to Be Schenck’s Partner as Producer. Bv United Preen HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 3.—Howard Hughes, who Hollywood thought should have stayed by his oil derricks and let the movie business alone, is going to do things on an even bigger scale fro r> now on. The young Texas millionaire, who astonished even tree-spending Hollywood with the costliness of his independent pictures, has bought a share in Cinema Arts and will be an equal partner with Joseph Schenck In operating the company. Hughes expects to make a heavy schedule of pictures under the Cinema Arts banner for release by United Artists. Among them will be some of the stories he purchased for his own organization, the Caddo Company—‘The Front Page,” "Queer People,’’ “Scarface” and "Dirigible.” Owns Tool Company Hughes is known best for his lavish "Holy Angels,” which Hollywood watched in production for three years and jokingly said would still be in the making when the actors had long, gray beards. When Howard Hughes was 20— that was only five years ago—he inherited a fortune from his father, the late Howard Hughes Sr. of Texas. He also was bequeathed the Hughes Tool Company, one of the lar t manufacturers of patent rotary ' cs for oil wells and mining, valves and outfittings for refineries, pipe lines and drilling, Sixplex rock bits and disk bits. First Venture Success The main plant of the Hughes Tool Company, Houston, of which the young producer is the sole owner, employs 725 men. There are factory branches in Oklahoma City, Los Angeles and other cities. It is a large and successful business. But Howard Hughes visited Hollywood. His uncle, incidentally, is Rupert Hughes, writer. Young Hughes decided he wanted to do something for himself, to do more than just coast along with profits from an inherited business. During his visit he financed “Everybody’s Acting.” directed bv Marshal Neilan, and received a 50 per’ cent return on his investment. He determined to turn his fortune to such ventures. So Hughes organized the Caddo Company, Inc., which produced sev-> eral money-makers. Hollywood Laughed Tt took three years and $4,000,000 to make "Hell’s Angels.” It took constantly changing technical and directorial staffs. Hughes has opinions of his own. The movies were in turmoil. “Kell’s Angels” started as a silent picture, with James Hall, Ben Lyon and Greta Missen featured. Along came sound and sound was put in. Then came the talkies. Greta Nissen had trouble with her accent. Jean Harlow became leading lady. But finally the picture was completed. Hollywood had laughed for three years and said the picture never would be completed. It was, but the cost was enormous. Hughes probably will not get his money back, but he is satisfied he has achieved a great air picture. STRAY DOG. ‘ADOPTED,’ SAVES LIVES OF TWO Howling Brings Rescue of Pair Under Fumes of Gas Burner. Bn United Press CHICAGO, Nov. 3.—Three weeks ago, a stray dog appeared at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Randall. He was hungry. They fed him and kept him "temporarily” until they could find someone who would give him a permanent heftne. Sunday night, neighbors heard the dog howling. He continued so long they became alarmed and investigated. They found him on the porch, his paws on the window still, looking into the house. Inside they found Mrs. Randall dead. Tire flames of a gas burner had been accidentally and the slimes had killed her. Randall and his daughter Louise, 21, were found unconscious, firemen revived them. They will recover. They will keep the dog now, permanently. RUTH L.IYAN OWEN WILL SPEAK IN CITY Finis for Reception Being Completed at Technical High. FIRST OCEAN FLIER OBSERVES BIRTHDAY Walter Wellman Failed In Pacific, Polar Hops in 1907 and J )09. Bu United Press NEW YORK, Nov. 3.—’'"’alter Wellman, first man to fly a modern airship over the ocean, celebrated his seventy-second birthday today arid recalled the adventures that made him woi'ld famous two decades ago. In 1307 and 1909 he undertook trans-Polar and trans-Pacific flights, both of which failed chiefly because of motor imperfections.
