5,000,000 FACE' IDLENESS,LABOR SURVEYSHOWS Estimate Means 20 Million Menaced by Dire Need, Says A. F. of L. Ru United l’rrss WASHINGTON, Oct. 30.—The size of the job confronting federal, state and municipal agencies dealing with unemployment was indicated today In a forecast of the American Federation of Labor that 5,000,000 persons were threatened by idleness this winter. On the basis of this estimate, the federation said 20,000,000 persons—-one-sixth of the entire population—were threatened with acute need during the cold months. The estimate was based on figures compiled by the federation in previous years. In 1928, when employment conditions were good, the federation found the jobless increased by 47 per cent from October to February. Last year the increase was 71 pre cent from October to January and by February the number of jobless had doubled. President Hoover's estimate of the number now unemployed is 3,500,000. The federation said an increase In the usual proportion would bring the number well over 6.000,000 by late winter. Os the federation’s membership of 800,000, approximately 168,000 are idle and 120,000 are working part time. Unemployment did not Improve from September to October, but the federation said this was not cause for discouragement, as It is a usual annual development. “Fifteen cities reported improved employment in October, but eight showed worse conditions. The latter cities were Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Paterson, N. J., and Seattle. (Railroads, service industries and theaters reported decreases in employment. PROLONGS LIFE OF SILK HOSE All will be interested in the. recent discovery of a leading New York fashion expert. She learned that besides perspiration all next-to-skin garments absorb an oily excretion from the sebaceous glands that causes silks to rot. Soap and water can not dissolve this destructive oil Aim—it requires a solvent like Energine. So when next washing silk hose or lingerie, add a tablespoonful of Energine to a quart 'of lukewarm, soapy water. Wash thoroughly—rinse well—and note the new fresh cleanliness—see how magically the original color is revived and with far less rubbing. You can’t appreciate liow much 'eoap and water fall short till you make this Energine test. More wear, too, from every pair of hose. Rheumatism Relieved R. I. Wilson, 1809 Union St., Indianapolis, said: “I was relieved of rheumatism which was caused by a kidney disorder that had poisoned my system. My legs were numb at times. I had many attacks of the savage fury of rheumatic pains that sometimes strikes down its victims. I tried every medicine recommended without relief until a friend told me about DIU-REX pills. I sent for a box and the second day I realized DIU-REX pills were the medicine I wanted. Before I had used all of the first box I was able to be out again.” DIU-REX pills stimulate the defective glands, throwing off the impurities—leaving you feeling years younger. Box, 49c.
