NOVEL FRENCH OPERA TO MAKE U. $. PREMIER ‘Lorenzaccio’ Selected as Opening Number for Chicago Season. EDITOR'S NOTE—This I* the final • rtlrlr of a serifs on the Chicago Civic Oper* i*aon. BY RAY BRENNAN I nited rres*, Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. Oct. 27.—A French novelty work, “Lorenzaccio,” has been selected to make its American premiere today as the opening number of the season of the Chicago Civic Opera company in its new skyscraper home. Rewritten especially for VanniMarcoux, the Franco-Itaiian singing actor, “Lorenzaccio” first was presented ten years ago by the Paris Opera Comique. The original was r drama written by the French poet, and dramatist, Alfred cie Musset. Vanni-Marcoux has been brought to Chicago from Paris to appear in the title role, which he made famous. "Lorenzaccio” first became a starring vehicle as a drama when it was adopted by Sarah Bernhardt in 1896. Mmc. Bernhardt achieved a triumph as the Marquise, but the role of Lorenzo overshadowed her part. In Paris and Monte Carlo, the role of Lorenzo is considered one of Vanni-Marcoux’ finest characterizations and the opera itself is considered a national institution of France. The first scene of “Lorenzaccio” Illustrates the morals of the ducal court of the Medici and introduces the chief characters, Alexander, the duke, and his cousin. Lorenzo, known contemptuously as Lorenzaccio.” Alexander is shown as a monster of cruelty and lust and Lorenzo is his ignoble servant. Friends of Alexander have attempted to warn him against liis cousin, suspecting him to be a traitor. Lorenzo changes his mode of life when his mother startles him with a story of having seen the ghost of his innocent youth, and that the

spirit fled when his present self came into the room. Meanwhile, the duke has seen Catherine Oinori. Lorenzo's young aunt and the only woman y.ho still believes in him. Alexander demanded that Lorenzo betray her to him. In the third act Lorenzo tells the secret of his life. Years before, he said, he made a vow to kill one of the tyrants who were oppressing Italy. Lorenzo tells members of his family how he selected Alexander for his victim and put himself under the duke’s influence. In the attempt to win his cousin's confidence, Lorenzo became corrupted and forgot his original purpose. In the last act, Lorenzo avenges himself and his family by killing the duke. LAUDS LUDLOW HOSPITAL WORK Legion Official Raps Effort to Discredit Democrat. Efforts of Republican speakers to discredit the part played by Reprej sentative Louis Ludlow (Detn.) in bringing the veterans’ hospital to ; Indianapolis, were criticised in an open letter by Dr. George W. Bowman, chairman of the hcspitaliza- | tion committee of the Indiana department, American Legion. Declaring he is a Republican, Eowman said e'ght Indiana repre- : sentatives called on Director-Gen-eral Frank T. Hines of the veterans’ bureau in a combined effort to prevent the location of the hospital at Indianapolis. One senator was committed to an upstate location and the other was neutral. “Persons not behind the scenes little realize the thoroughness with which our case was prepared and the immense detail of getting it in order. In all of this, Ludlow played a masterful part.” Bowman praised Ludlow for his efforts in behalf of the veterans and declared that if kept in congress he will be able to continue his good work.

I GRANT BRITISH WOMEN MORE DIVORCE RIGHTS New Legal Code Now Puts Sexes on Equal Footing. | Bu United Proof , , | LONDON, Oct. 27.—New divorce laws now in effect in England tend to temper justice with mercy. A modem spirit of broad thinking has resulted in the new code. Women are now placed on the ! same level with men in regards to facilities for pursuing divorce petitions. Women up to about seven years ago in order secure their fretdom had to establish against men both unfaithfulness and cruelty or desertion. This code of statutes had the effect on the authorities that le- ; gal cruelty was not established until an adverse effect on the wife’s physical health and well-being was shown.
