Largely self-educated by reason of assiduous reading -and travel, the voung Mussolini became assistant editor of the "Avanti,” the great Milan Socialist paper, with a circulation of more than 100.000 daily. Only meagerly educated, with a common school instruction. Hitler made his daily bread as a house uainter. Mussolini was converted into a man of action by the sad condition of his country, torn by political factions. Italy was .slipping down hill. He invented Fascism and made his triumphal march upon Rome, won the throw of the gice and has been in power ever since. No such home patriotism animated Hitler. For reasons best known to himself, he did not try his political fortunes in his native Austria, but in Germany, of which he is not yet even a citizen and, therefore, not eligible as an officeholder. a a a NOW whatever misfortunes may hit Germany in a business way latterly, the republican statesmen who guided her destinies during the last ten years did great things. They wrote the republican constitution of Weimar; they restored orderly life out of the revolutionary* chaos that followed the end of the war; they stabilized the currency after it: enormous and unprecedented debacle: they got the French out o! the Ruhr; they got them out of tlir Rhineland; they secured Germany’:, entry into the League of Nations as a recognized great power. When Hitler set to work on his inarch to power, he developed no new ideas. He took them readymade. Tlie Fascists of Italy wore black shirts, so he clothed his men with brown shirts. Mussolini chose as the emblem of his party the old Roman fasces, the bundle of rods with the axe in the middle, carried by the lictor before the magistrate. Hitler chose the swastika cross, the favorite insignia of the antiSemitic youths of German universities. The Italian Fascists originated the famous extended arm -alute. Hitler took it. The Italian Fascists composed a rattling good marching song. Hitler imitated them. , After long and careful preparation, Mussolini and his men won in their march on Rome. But after the lightest of preparations Hitler and General LudendorfT started a march on Berlin which collapsed at the first shots by the German Reichswehr right in the streets of Munich, t heir point of proposed departure. Hitler is a talker and latterly an organizer of a political party, an opportunist who took advantage of the troubles of his adopted country. He has in recent months never made clear whether he favors a restoration of the monarchy or a form of republic with himself and his friends as dictators. He has not told his panacea for unemployment. He has not told his remedy for business depression. B B B IN exterior politics he has captured the minjis of the hot-headed unthinking youths and of the old women by loudly proclaiming that he ( will free Germany from the “enslavement” of the treaty of Virsailles and the Young Reparation plan. Just how he would meet a French army if he tried to make scraps of paper of these international agreements, he has failed to make clear. As to his interior politics it may be summed up in three words: "Blame the Jews!” "Who influenced the governors of Germany to sign the Versailles treaty and the Young plan? Hitler answers: The Jews. Who is responsible for business depression and unemployment? Hitler makes the same answer. He is hazy on many things but in this matter he is clear: German Jews are to be deprived of their rights of citizenship, with no vote and no ability to hold office. Those who have come into the country since 1914 are to be booted out. They are not to own, edit or write German newspapers. Jewish finance, whatever that may mean, is to be expropriated. Theodore Wolff, famous editor of the powerful Berliner Tageblatt. not long ago had an interview with Mussolini in which, with a squint at what was going op in Germany, he dryly said: "Fascism is an Italian thing.” It is not a matter of export. FORM GROUPS TO WAR ON FILM MONOPOLY New Corporation to Carry Fight to All Lines of Business. New- attempts to break the alleged producers’ monopoly on motion picture distribution was launched by attorney Louis Rosenberg of Indianapolis by filing incorporation papers with the secretary of state for the Association Against Business Monopoly. ✓ The organization will not confine its fight to motion pictures, but to all monopolies in the field of business, Rosenberg stated. BY WALLACE CARROLL t.'nitrd Prrss Staff Correspondent LONDON, Oct. 2':.—They were whispering the tale around in simian society circles in London today of a king's honor and how it was avenged, and of a proud queen who slipped on a banana peel. High on the summit of Monkey hill in the green domain known as Regent’s park. King Mumbo ruled the baboon tribe and ruled it well, though he was old and fat and even a'bit cockeyed. The king had three wives, all of whom were comely and fair to look upon. But his favorite was Alombo, a she of consummate grace and distinction, for she came of a family tree that was as famous in baboon annals as it was densely populated. The tale they told involved Queen Alombo and a certain young climber at court called Oombah. Oombah was young and strong and glib of tongue, although that never brought him any extra pear nuts. her for his own, after the manner of the jungle. He laid his plans skilfully. He knew King Mumbo took a siesta each afternoon. None dared disturb the monarch then, and that was the time Oombah chose to court the royal consort. Accordingly, one afternoon when the king lay sleeping, his tail knotted around a branch, Oombah clambered lightly to the branch where Queen Alombo sat sunning her auburn fur. Oombah offered the queen a bit \ of banana peel which he had saved from the noonday meal. The queen, struck by this act of devotion, invited the young man to accompany her on a scamper through the foliage. She had admired his ability to hang by his tail for hours without getting dizzy, and was glad to know him better. Day after day Oombah and the queen spent hours together, and many a rare gossip got about the court. But nope dared tell the king, and they say for a long time he never knew. Came a day, however, when Mumbo could not sleep. He was restless and went for a stroll, an unprecedented procedure. He came upon Oombah and the queen carrying on their courtship. Bellowing with rage he called the royal simian guard and through the tree tops they flew after Oombah and the luckless queen. Oombah fought with all his might, but in the end was tossed broken to earth. The queen was put to death by royal command. Keepers of the zoo later that day came across the torn body of the bold Oombah. They suspected it was a case of “cherchez la femme,” and found the woman, also dead.!

Oct. 2 Two rum boats and liquor cargoes valued at SIOO,OOO were captured by four coast guard destroyers after the rum runners had been trapped I and raked with machine gun fire at the mouth of Narragansett baytoday. One captured craft was the 45foot speed boat Helen of Newport, whose crew beached her on Napatree point near old Ft. Mansfield ' and escaped afoot. I Coast guards reported having seen seven or eight men leave this boat, on which 1,000 cases of liquor, having a retail value of SSO a case, were found. The second boat seized was the eighty-two-foot speed boat, Pueblo, recently built at Mystic, Conn. The craft hove to when her crew apparently realized escape was impossible. The Pueblo also carried 1,000 cases. Coast guards captured the Pueblo's crew of eight. It had been learned by coast guards that a rum vessel from Europe had dropped anchor off Montauk Point.
