COURT ENJOINS ‘MAYOR'S' TRIAL IN RAVENSWOOD ><ew Stumbling Block Faced in Trustees’ Squabble Over Election. Residents of Ravenswood encouncred andther stumbling block tolay in attempts to jJacify the town's iquabbling board of trustees with issuance of an order by Circuit Judge Harry O. Chamberlin retraining majority faction of the ward from “trying’’ Charles O. Ford, minority member, on a charge" of neglect of duty. Ford, unofficial “mayor" of the town, was about to be “tried ’ for neglect” Monday night when Chamberlin intervened with the retraining order against William B. Hubbs Sr., and Robert Stamm, majority members. Depty sheriffs served the order on Hubbs at Sylvan and Seventyihird streets while he was en route to Hill-Crest bungalow, official meeting place of the board. Stamm, ;t was said, did not contemplate •trying" Ford, although the order restrains him from doing it. Meanwhile, taxpayers and residents mark time to the tune of unlit streets, streets full of chuckholes and other civic inconveniences, while the town’s bank roll lays "locked” in the bank, due to the board's squabbling. Since last January, when the board “split” in questioning election of the town’s clerk, G. C. Smith, trustees have been in a deadlock.

HOME IS DESTROYED Family’s Wheeled Shelter Burned to Ground. Fire from an oil heater Monday night wiped away the only shelter of the family of R. C. Wanderei, a house on wheels, on South Belmont avenue, near the Pennsylvania railroad. Mrs. Wanderei returned from a neighborhood pharmacy and found the truck in flames. Dashing inside she rescued her baby, and then was forced to watch her only home burn to the ground. The family spent the night in parked railway coaches.

‘TURKEY IN STRAW’ IS NOW IN BIG TIME Early Hoofing Tune Now Walks Right Out on Same Program With Chopin, Schumann, Bach and Beethoven. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN WE have often heard in song the question, asked: What has become of Sally? No longer interested in Sally, but do you know what kind of company our old friend, “Turkey in the Straw," is keeping these days? Well, the “turkey" is walking right down the musical aisle on the same program arm in arm with Chopin, Schumann, Bach, Beethoven and the rest of the mighty. „ W’ell, you may think that the turkey landed in the wrong barnyard, but you are all wrong. I am just trying to tell you about a delicious musical evening that I had last night at Caleb Mills hall in Shortridge.

tUUUiVOt VTVUUIg I'UUU -*■ Maybe if we had ever found Sally she might be keeping grand company also, but I doubt it. Last night Guy Maier and Lee Pattison appeared in a recital of music for two pianos. These men on two different pianos brought great music, even majestic music of Chopin, Cesar Franck, Bach and the others in gorgeous technical and tone picture fashion to the many present. These men found lots of hidden beauty in the freat masters that we miss on a single piano. I realized that when they played Schumann’s “Scherzo,” as transcribed from it by Maier. Here w’as haunting and sudden deliciously rapid beauty. Perfectly done. We could easily see what these men could accomplish with Beethoven when they played variations on a Beethoven theme by SaintSaens. Here was really great musical literature for two pianos. And played as such. Really, it did my heart good to see Maier and Pattison to be human and big enough in their third group to take the steel corsets off of a piano program. It is about time that we realize that there is comedy of a delightful nature in the piano, and that when properly grouped it will not be an insult to thf great masters such as Chopin and Schumann. It was announced that the order of the third group would be changed as stated on the printed program. We were told that after the two men played the delightful Arensky “Valse" that we would then have the “Turkey.” And we did, with a lot of trimmings which sounded at times that Gershwin must have had a hand in it when some weird noises oozed out all over the two pianos. At times when the skeleton of the “turkey" was about to fade away, we had a taste of “Old Black Joe,” “Suwanee River," “Dixie” and the like. And part of the time it sounded like the old gang of favorites was going at the same time. Here was great fun and proves what really fine showmen these two great artists are. They know how to build a program. And then they came back with some more grand fun by playing “Three Little Pieces,” the last showing a pupil trying to practice with her teacher. It was not difficult to discover who was the teacher. And then from the laugh, right into the sweet beauty of Strauss’ “Blue Danube Waltzes.” And what an enjoyable as well as a sensible evening of melody as well as elegant technique. And the teachers are to be congratulated on the opening of their series. The crowd even had to use the chairs on the stage, and I never have seen that before for the teachers in the new Caleb Mills hall. Again, I say that this here man’s town is hungry for music—real music and the theater of music. it a A SPLENDID EXAMPLE OF REAL SHOW BRAINS Had the fine experience yesterdayin running into an act that backs up one of my pet theories. My theory is this —so many couples, meaning a man and woman who walk out on the varsity stage to clown and sing, fail to be personalities just because they are like the other 99 per cent of such acts. No wonder we sometimes groan when week after week we see ec- > ing about tjie same | v old thing in the same old way. Not : so with Lane, and ' I * ar P er - The minute they'came out m jfy .. >, on the stage I * sensed that these tw° had showman--■r 5 material. And they 1 J above all they have June what I called just common show sense, and that is the highest grade. Their parody over the telephone is good and made individual both by material and delivery. There is a splendid brightness of touch on the part of the woman in the act. And she knows how to dress. Thank goodness for that. Their knockout

comes when they introduce their guessing baseball game. Here is something new, and it is really fine fun. Well done. I give this act the angel food cake, being my first “prize.” I didn’t bake it. It is all in fun, but this is a fine act and one that other acts should study. I do not see that it is necessary to tell you about tne merits of the Six Galenos. . They are among the best of the acrobats. I have praised them every time they have been here. Cherry Blossom and June come under the head of a pleasing juvenile act. June has a bunch of personality and I hope that both girls will study the tap dance a little more. Everybody must grow in his work, you know. Will Higgie and Girls is just a fair revue. It lacks showmanship and punch. The best thing is Higgie’s conception of a Russian dance done in American tap style. Edison and Lowe attempt eccentric musical stoff along the old pattern. Their stunt with the dog gets the laugh. Bill includes Ray and Ann Raymond. Asked Connel Turpen, my observer, to tell you about the movie feature at the Lyric. Turpin’s report is as follows: “Scotland Yard” is the story of two men, who look alike, after a surgical operation is performed on the one whose face was shattered by shell in the war. It is the type of yarn that if it really had happened would make interesting evenings about the fire as hapded down from generation to generation by word of mouth. The director v has* caught this spirit of the fireplace, and the picture enfolds before you smoothly, without being overexciting, and still keeping your interest with enough suspense that is well-timed and placed. The work of Edmund Lowe is well sustained, in that of the dual role. Joan Bennett is charming in her different reactions to the two men. although she thinks they are one and the same. “Scotland Yard" will make an interesting evening for you, without leaving you wrecked emotionally or mentally. Now at the Lyric. a a tt Other theaters today offer: “Those Three French Girls at the Palace. “Up the River" at the Apollo, “Playboy of Paris” at the Indiana, “The Bad Man” at the Circle, “Animal Crackers" at the Ohio, movies at the Colonial and burlesque at the Mutual.
