Babies Help Strengthen Home Ties BY MARTHA LEE It would seem important, in this day and age, when we finally have managed to shake the silly scruples of past generations, that before men ana women marry they have some understanding abc't the point of a family. Time was when the mere mention of babies would have sent a young girl into a. swoon Her mother and father never talked about such things in her presence. The subject was taboo. If a girl did happen to have any knowledge of life, she was forced to conceal that knowledge. Fortunately for us all this, after generations, mamas and papas decided ignorance was not so much bliss as it was danger. They decided to recognize the importance, of satisfying the natural curiosity of boys and girls by telling them what life was all about. Attitude Is Important So it does not seem out of tune with the times that men and women who contemplate matrimony should find out just exactly where the other stands on the question of having children. Marriages are made or ruined for some people by the appearances of families. And it seems essential that young persons about to be married find out just where they stand on the subject. Too often marriages go on the rocks completely because of a difference of opinion on this point. Dear Miss Lee—l have bean married five rears. I make a fairly decent salary. We own our own home, have a car and a fair sized bank account. My wife and I have been a fairly happy couple, except for one thine. I would like very much to have a small family. She does not care to have any children. Her excuse was that we did not have the money to rear a family properly. But now we have, and that does not change the Situation. I feel our home and our life is so empty and incomplete. What do you think about me bringing up the subject of adopting a chlld? MR. M. Children Bring Joy Having an adopted child is not quite as nice as having children of your own. but it will fill the void. Since you and your wife can not come to an agreement on the subject, it seems only fair that you s.hould be, allowed the joy of having a, youngster in your home. You would be doing an act of charity that should reflect happiness in your life by taking a parentless, homeless child and giving it the advantages of a home and parents. Life, would be so much less tragic and complicated if all childless couples would adopt some of the children in the world who are forced to go through life without the counsel and advice of parents. It seems a splendid solution to your problems. Fire Destroys Home - COATESVILLE, Ind., Oct. 17. Fire, caused from a defective flue, destroyed the residence of Frank O'Neal east of here. Just Every Day Sense
BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON
A MAN in New York City, who ■was jilted by his girl more than thirty years ago, has hated and warred upon women ever since, according to his own confession. Because one person proved false to him, this particular man set himself the task of- being a hater of the sex. And a hard task it is for any normal male, and one that takes endless feeding of the flames of prejudice and animosity. Because one woman was unstable, more than a score of good years were wasted and the happiness of friendship and love was relinquished, and for what? A pet grouch. A good many men, not quite so

extreme, have very queer ideas about women. You may hear them declaimed almost any day, if you care to listen. Though men understand that their kind may be divided into millions of different temperaments, they cling fatuously to the idea that all * women are exactly alike. a a u men know* somebody wlio is a poor wife and a careless mother, and therefore jump to the conclusion that all who come after her will follow in her vacillating footsteps. If they do meet by chance a girl who is a gold digger, they announce immediately that the younger generation is out for a }l it can get. If they encounter a woman who is interested in politics and public notice, they prophesy that within ten years all women will be running for office. Listening to such a masculine type, you can be forced to only one conclusion: That men are neither so open-minded nor so wise as they would have us believe. In a world that contains 1,000 varieties of humming birds, we at least should be granted the privilege of boasting ten or a dozen different kinds of women.
