ECLIPCE OF SUN TO BE CAUGHT WITH JjAMERA Scientists Waiting on Tiny South Pacific Island to Take Pictures. BY JAMES STOKLEY lulled Frtu Science Correipondent WASHINGTON, Oct. 16.—From a study of the sun, largely by information gathered at total eclipses, the astronomer is able to learn more about the atmosphere of that body, nearly 93,000,000 miles away.

than tha meteorologist can -tell about the earth’s atmosphere only twenty-five or so miles above the ground on which we walk. Another eclipse expedition, sponsored by the United States naval observatory, now has erected a temporary observatory on a tiny island in the South Pacific ocean. Prom the photographs that will be taken by this expedition Wednesday, Oct. 22, when the shadow of the moon again touches the earth, still more knowledge may be revealed of the sun, the source of all the energy of the earth. The naval observatory expedition is under the scientific direction of Dr. 8. A. Mitchell, director of the McCormick observatory of the University of Virginia and veteran of seven previous eclipse expeditions. With a camera sixty-three feet long, other members of the group will photograph the sun's corona, the faint wings of bright matter that surround the sun at all times.
but only are visible at a total eclipse, T.-hen the moon for a moment cuts down the brilliant glare of the inner part. Dr. Mitchell himself will photograph the flash spectrum. Just before, and just after, the moon completely covers the sun, a narrow sliver of the sun is visible. This sliver consists only of the sun's atmosphere, and then, and then only, the light of this atmosphere can be photographed by itself. From such spectrum photographs many of the secrets of the solar atmosphere are revealed. At Niuafou island, in the Tonga group in the south Pacific, which is the scene of the naval expedition, there also is a party 'of New Zealand astronomers who will take photographs of the corona. One member of their group. Dr. Andrew Thomson, director of the Apia observatory, in Samoa, will make measurements of changes in
