TAXI ORDINANCE IS BRANDED TRY FOR MONOPOLY United Cab Firm Counsel Assails Attempt to Fix High Rate. Charge that the proposed ordinance for taxi regulation by the safety board is an effort by large companies to create a local taxi monopoly, was made to the board today by Delbert O. Wilmeth, counsel for the United Cab Company. Wilmeth declared majority of the provisions in the proposed code now arc contained in state and city laws. He said the chief exception is the proposal to fix a minimum rate of 25 cents for the first mile. At present a city ordinance provides for a maximum rate of 60 cents for the first mile, Wilmeth declared. Scheduled for Review The board said the proposed law will be turned over to the city law department for review. Donald S. Morris, board member, said he would like “to know why the safety board should fix minimum rates?" “It is an effort by big companies to make the safety board a city public service commission,” Wilmeth said. "After control is vested in one board, the transportation companies will start playing politics. Then It will be the effort to place the right men in office so eventually the companies can buy out the small competitors and control the situation.”

Service for Workers Wilmeth said his company, operating on a low minimum rate, offered service to working persons that could not be obtained by them under higher rates. “It is not the disposition of the board to act officially without referring the matter to the law department,” Charles Myers, board president, told Wilmeth. “This board Will not indorse vicious laws.” The proposed taxi ordinance was passed to the safety board by the citizens’ traffic committee without recommendations. The safety board is supposed to recommend action to the council. $30,000 IN CONTRACTS LET BY CITY BOARD Chief Award of Sanitary Commission Is for $14,981. Contracts, totaling more than $30,000 were let today to various companies by the sanitary board for equipment of the dehydration plant at the city sewage disposal plant, Harding street and White river. Chief award was to the Indianapolis Building Supply Company for conveyance equipment on a bid of $14,981.85. Other companies to which contracts were let: Central Boiler and Sheet Iron Works, $978: Crane Company, $2,244; General Electric Company, $389: Link-Belt Company, $374; American Blower Company, $405; Paragon Manufacturing Company, $2lO, and Irvin C. De Haven Engineering Company, $56. REALTY ‘RUSTLERS’ GET $79,687 SALES Head Campaign to Boost Business; Other Leases Reported. With total sales of $79,687 the “Rustlers” team of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board headed a campaign today of realtors to boost business in the city. The team headed by Thomas F. Carson also reported a rental lease of $40,500. The “Hustlers” team in charge of Henley T. Hottel reported sales totaling $18,150. The contest opened last Friday and will continue until Oct. 22.
