MORROW MAY ' REVEAL STAND i ON PRESIDENCY, Senatorial Opponent Likely to Force Showdown in Campaign. BY RAY TUCKER AcrtDti-Hovird Staff Writer NEWARK, Oct. B.—Dwight W. Morrow’s reaction to frequent mention of him as a possible rival to

President Hoover learned before the closfe of the New Jersey senatorial campaign in which he carries the F ( publican banner against Alexander Simpson, the picturesque prosecutor in the Hails - Mills murder case. Except in conversations with his friends, Morrow, whose demand for repeal

of the prohibition laws has piqued political interest throughout the country, has kept silent about all this talk of himself as a potential presidential candidate. He has lunche--' and talked with Hoover, delivc ed speeches and performed exce ent work for the administration in Mexico. Reference to possible rivalry between him and his former “chief’’ must have proved embarrassing to both men. Just what does Morrow think of it? Great G. O. P. Secret This, together with the President's attitude, might be called the great Republican secret of 1930. And in ihe contest now getting under way, half of it may be told. For Simpson is regarded as far too clever a campaigner not to ask. As part of his attack on Hoover’s record, the Democrat is expected to demand whether Morrow believes the President should not be renominated. For Morrow to remain silent might be used by the Democrats as an admission that he can not defend the record at Washington. So Morrow may tell, and the W’ay he phrases his answer will rank next in interest to Calvin Coolidge's “I do not choose to run.” No matter what Morrow says, however, because of his prominence and his prohibition stand, he is in the presidential limelight. This alone ought to help him in this dripping wet state, provided he handles the problem deftly.

Morrow Likely to Win It generally is expected that the former Morgan partner and ambassador to Mexico will win Nov. 4. His stunning defeat of Franklin Fort, the President’s close friend, who contested the nomination as a dry, gave an indication of the vote he ought to get. Careful scrutiny of county returns have convinced Republican leaders the vast majority of the drys will vote for Morrow, despite the hostility of the Anti-Saloon League, which seems to have lost its grip In this state. New Jersey normally is Republican by s large mo.iority. Hoover having carried it by 310,000 two years ago. But in offyears it often furnishes surprises.
