MACHADO GIVES HIS OWN SIDE OF CU6ACHISIS President Reviews Causes of Unrest on Island; Says Foes Are Few. In the following article. President Gerardo Machado of Cuba review* the recent political disturbance* In Cuba, •a. hi* opaonent* are dissidents of no real political entity. He reviews his administration. hi* public work* programs and Cuba's international effort* and works and tells of hi* proposed economle and political reforms to prevent any further unrest. BY GERARDO MACHADO President of Cuba (Copyright, 1930, in all countries by United Pressi HAVANA. Oct. 7.—The political figitac.on which has caused so much comment, and the publication of so much Insidious news, really is limited to Havana and to the propaganda and activities of individuals segregated from the regularly constituted political parties. These individuals have been joined by others of Communistic tendencies who are ready at all times to take advantage of any situation or any circumstance to carry on their work of propaganda against regularly organized government. A sad example of these activities was the recent use of some students, naturally excitable, and ready for adventure, in the promotion of a disturbance Fortunately the authorities were able to meet the situation without difficulty; but unfortunately one student was killed—the victim of malicious propaganda and the rashness of youth. Three Leading Parties There are three leading parties in Cuba,—the Liberal, existent since the establishment of the republic; the Conservative, organized during the second Intervention of the United States in 1906. and the Popular, organized during the administration of General Mario Menocal in 1919. These parties, with few exceptions, comprise all the voters of Cuba. It will be noted, also, that my administration did not take part in their establishment. There is a group, composed of former members of the three political powers, along with other heterogeneous elements, who have organized as an opposition group, though not as a political entity They represent an effort to create unrest and discontent, and animosity against the government. This group has demanded, most unreasonably—among other things —that the November elections be postponed. Demand Can't Be Met This demand is the principal cause of the recent trouble. It may be seen plainly that this demand can not be met, ‘because it is essential under the Contistution to rpnew the congress. The other cause is the effort, of this group to excite popular sentiment by citing the economic crisis which affects the entire world. We naturally are passing through a severe economic crisis, together with other countriees that have more resources and wealth than we. The crisis has been augmented by the low price of sugar, our principal product. Nevertheless we have been weath- * rring the financial storm. Our ■banks maintain themselves firm, as iwas evidenced by the fact that when lone bank was in difficulties a few ■days ago panic was limited to the ■institution directly affected. Has Plenty of Support k To the end of maintaining order ' I have the support of the Governor’s of the six Cuban provinces, of 120 of the 124 mayors, of the chambers of commerce, of manufacturers’ associations and many other groups. In fact, my government, is backed by 90 per cent of all the elements that make up our national life. Then, too. the army and navy are behind me in full loyalty. Now as to my administration since I first took offee May 20, 1925. I have reduced public expenditures and yet have increased efficiency. Criminality, which in other epochs was fostered by frequent pardons, has diminished. t am particularly proud of our new public works, such as the capitol. hospitals, schools, public buildings, etc. Then there is the central highway, so badly needed to promote agriculture and industry. These have done much to reduce unemployment. at a time when shortage of work was general throughout the world ALL DODGE MODELS REDUCED IN PRICE SIOO Slash in Cost Is Announced by Local Dealer.
