BRITISH EMPIRE CONSIDERS HIGH TARIFF FENCE Products of United States Eventually Will Be Shut Out, Under Plan. Bn ■ crtppi-H'i’r'tr'l Settupiptr AVionee WASHINGTON, Oct. 3—Taking a leaf from the notebook of Uncle Sam, the British empire, at an epoch-making meeting at London, todav is laying the foundation for a tariff wall which progressively will shut out the products of this and other countries. All the empire’s self-governing dominions, and India, have sent their prime ministers or other highranking spokesmen to London to represent them at the imperial conference. jjjfhongh the right, of secession and |||ortant questions of foreign poljwfand defense are on the agenda, ' Jr main issue is economic, or, more |®cifically, empire trade. That, Canada, Australia, South America and the other dominions intend to throw down the bars and agree to a general program of free trade, is, of course, out of the question. But a plan whereby preference will be shown empire products, by some arrangement to be worked out, is regarded as a certainty. Independence of the dominions, for all practical purposes, was acknowledged years ago. Only the thinnest of threads, mostly of a sentimental nature, binds the self-governing portions of the empire together. Now it is 'tacitly agreed that there exists the right of secession. England knows the dominions hardly could be held by force. Between 40 and 50 per cent of the United States’ total foreign trade is with the British empire. Nearly 20 per cent of this total Is with Canada. Approximately another 20 per cent is with the United Kingdom. If we put a fence around our trade and Britain puts a fence around hers, eventually trade between Britain and America must dimmish almost to the vanishing I point.
SWISS INVENT RADIO OARAGE DOOR OPENER Electrical Plants Perfect System; Just Press a Button. B'i United trrx.e WASHINGTON, Oct. 3—Press a little button, out shoot radio waves, and the garage doors automatically open. The commerce department reports a system for opening and dosing garage doors through the medium of radio waves has been invented in Switzerland by the Neufchatel electrical plants. Operation of the new contraption is explained thus: “A few yards in front of the garage the driver presses a button fixed near his seat in the car, which causes waves to be sent out. “These waves are picked up by an aerial fixed on top of the garage and serve to start a motor which automatically opens or closes the doors."

‘LILIOM’ IS BOOKED AT THE APOLLO New Version of Molnar’s Play Will Make a BjcJ for Popular Favor Here Starting Saturday for a Week. “T ILIOM." as produced in New York by the Theatre Guild in 1921, JL/ remained for eight sears the one play Frank Borzage. the director of "Seventh Heaven.” wanted to bring to the screen above all other stones he had ever read, or stew enacted. Then one year ago, it was decided to produce the famous Franz Molnar play as a talking picture drama. Borzage studied and prepared for the production of “Liliom,” coming to the Apollo next Saturday, before actual filming began. His treatment of the theme, the settings and the cast were all gone about with infinite care and with the avowed intention of making the
movietone' version a bigger, artistic triumph than the immortal ‘‘Seventh Heaven.” Charles Farrell is featured in the title role as the “spieler” for the merry-go-round in this symbolical drama of love. He meets and falls in love with “Julie,” a pretty servant girl. Their marriage leads to cisaster through Charlie’s inability to adjust himself to every-day life after his colorful career with the carnival, but through circumstances brought about by a mystical visit to heaven, the lives of all affected are made happy by love. Rose Hobart, a recent recruit to the audible screen, but recently the star of the New York stage production, “Death Takes a Holiday,” plays the feminine lead of “Julie,” and Estelle Taylor lends her beauty, charm and sophistication as well as dramatic talent to the role of “Madame Muskat.” H. B. Warner and Lee Tracy also have important roles of the production. An unusual short subject will accompany the feature on the program, in the football series by knute Rockne and his famous Notre Dame eleven. e a tt Indianapolis theaters today offer: “Girl of the Golden West” at the Indiana, “The Spoilers” at the Circle, “Anybody’s Woman” at the Ohio, Jim and Walt at the Lyric, “Whoopee” at the Palace, “The
