CLUMBERS BALK ON EQUIPMENT FORJCHOQLS Refuse to Submit Bids on Supplies; Unwritten Pact Charged. Charges that Indianapolis plumbing supply firms and master plumbers are engaged in a brawl of racketeering against the city schools were made at the meeting of the school board Tuesday night when not one answer was received to the board's invitation for bids on plumbing supplies. These fixtures and equipment were to be used for the instruction of the pupils in Arsenal Technical high school, and there has been an urgent need for the supplies since the schools opened, officials said. Invitations Sent Out Invitations were sent to all plumbing supply houses of the city, A. B. Good, school business director reported, but not one answer was received. As more than S2OO supplies arc needed, the law requires they be purchased by bids, Good explained. "If it were not for that stipulation, I would go out on the market either here or in some other city and buy the equipment, which we must have,” Good said. He charged that the schools have experienced the utmost difficulty in purchasing any type of plumbing fixture for their own use because of some apparently unwritten agreement between the plumbers and the supply houses. Plumbers Resentful Good afterwards explained there always has seemed to be a resentment by master plumbers that the trade Is being taught in the crafts school at Technical high. "We are hindered in every manner and form and it simply remains for us to buy supplies where we may,” he declared. The board authorized Good to confer w.th the school attorney, Albert Baker, and then make the necessary purchases as he sees fit, subject to the approval of the board. COAST GUARD BUYS RESCUE WORK PLANES Five Aircraft Are Designed for Use in Open Sea. Bu Serinos-Hownrd }JewsvnDcr Alliance WASHINGTON, Oct I.—The coast guard Tuesday spent $316,000 for five new arplanes, to be used in its once-famous mission of rescuing people from the sea, and not for chasing rum-runners. The contract, pending for months, was awarded the Fokker Aircraft Corporation. .Delivery of the planes will start In about six months. The plane is designed especially for work in the open sea, so that it can be used to take passengers of! foundered boats and return them safely to shore. The coast guard for four years has been using small seaplanes and amphibians. These have proved valuable In reporting and observing, but were unable to operate in heavy seas and effect actual rescues. POOLROOM WAR BY COPS TALKED Search Warrants Are Not Needed, Says Attorney. Drive against licensed poolrooms in Indianapolis by police as a further move to crush crime, was considered today by city police officials. Action against the poolrooms was forecast Tuesday afternoon when James E. Deery, city attorney, informed officials search warrants are not necessary for raiding poolrooms where law violations are believed under way. He said licensing makes them public places and persons in them can be arrested on evidence obtained without warrants. City councilmen Monday will consider two ordinances proposed by the safety board Tuesday to smash at baseball pools and horse race betting in Indianapolis. One of the proposed ordinances provides for maximum penalties of six months imprisonment and S3OO fine for persons having gambling tickets or paraphernalia in their possession. The other proopses similar penalties for persons sending or receiving baseball game or horse race results for betting purposes by telephone or telegraph In Indianapolis from any point In Indiana. WARNS ON MENINGITIS Dr. Morgan Cites Two Deaths Out of Four Cases in September. With two deaths out of four cases of cerebro-spinal meningitis In September, Dr. Herman G. Morgan today warned against a recurrence of the disease this winter, and reiterated a previous warning against infantile paralysis, eleven cases of which were reported last month. Negro Stabbed Fatally Quarreling over a woman, William Nunely, 23, Negro, 958 North Belmont avenue, Tuesday afternoon stabbed Jack Harriford, Negro, 1924 Yandes street, at the rear of 1001 Colton street. Harriford died in city hospital admitting room, and police charged Nunely with murder.
