PRESIDENT OF ECUADOR OFFERS TO MIT POST Congress Refuses to Accept Ayora’s Resignation in Crisis. Bti t'nitrd Prt* QUITO, Ecuador, Sept. 30. President Isibro Ayora remains determined today to relinquish the presidency of Ecuador, despite an unconditional vote of confidence given him by a full session of congress and refusal of congress to accept his resignation. Ayora regarded his resignation as the only means of saving the country “from its present crisis.” Premier Julio Moreno, also secretary of the interior, had resigned before President Ayora announced his own resignation. Colonel Carlos Guerrero, who succeeded Moreno as minister of the interior, will assume the presidency if congress accepts Ayora's resignation. Quito appeared nervous during the political developments, and there was considerable activity around the barracks, but there were no disturbances. The part military leaders played in Ayora’s resignation remained obscure. While it was reported officially that they had sought to persuade the presiden, to remain in office, the rise in power of Colonel Guerrero within forty-eight hours is obvious. Ecuador has been troubled with financial and business, depression and political rivalry between the coast, the producing section of the country. and the Sierra region, causing considerable bitterness.
WAITERS OBJECT TO TITLE OF ‘GARCON’ French Union Denounces Word as ‘Unduly Familiar.’ Bn V piled Prms PARIS, Sept. 30.—Now the “garcons”—those haughty waiters of all ages upon whom depend the satisfaction of hunger and thirst—do not wish to be'called “garcons.” Inflamed by the impassioned utterances of Gaston Gerard, high commissioner of tourists, and emboldened by post-war tips, they have put their union on record as denouncing the most common word in the French language as being unduly familiar. Nor will the “garcons” answer to whistling, clapping or shouting. They have ruled out “boy,” “hello” or “I say there, you.” First and given names will be correct, and if the customer doesn’t know the first name, simply and respectfully, “monsieur.”
