BRAWL DEATH CASE SET FOR TRIALNOV, 17 William Secrist Indicted in Maywood Speakeasy Fatal Fight. One of the most important cases on the criminal court calendar—•hat of William Secrist, 1627 Howard street, alleged gambler and police character, indicted for involuntary manslaughter following a brawl in a Maywood speakeasy in 1928, resulting in the death of a man—has been set for trial Nov. 17, it was learned today. Involving at least one deputy sheriff, Secrist's case has remained untouched since March. 1929, when attorneys failed to throw the case out of court on a motion to quash. Blamed for Death Secrist allegedly engaged in a fist fight with Victor Lockwood, a tubercular, Oct. 19. 1928, breaking both jaws, as result of which, prosecutors charge, Lockwood died Dec. 17, the same year. The matter neyer was investigated by Coroner Charles H. Keever. Keever's aids today said the case .eached their office with the statement of a doctor that Lockwood died of pneumonia. Deputy Participant The fight followed a party at the home of Mary Parmalee, near Maywood. Charles W. Bell, deputy sheriff under Sheriff George L. Winkler, was a participant in the fight, and was one of the witnesses beard by the gland jury which indicted Secrist. Several state’s witnesses are said to have disappeared, although Paul Rhoadarmer, chief deputy prosecutor, said the case will be tried without fail. Secrist's lunch room was raided Thursday by police. Mrs. Secrist was taken to police headquarters, but, released. She said her husband was on a fishing trip. DEBTORS OF DEFUNCT AUTO COMPANY SUED Peterson-Keyes Firm Receiver Acts to Collect S9OO Accounts. Eighteen suits against debtors of the defunct Peterson-Keyes Auto Sales Company to collect S9OO on delinquent accounts, were filed today in civil municipal court one by George A. Van Dyke Jr„ receiver. Paul H. Keyes and William B. Peterson, owners, were found guilty last spring of misappropriating almost SIOO,OOO of the company’s funds and now’’ are serving two to fourteen years’ prison sentences given by Criminal Judge James A. Collins. Van Dyke w-as appointed receiver of the remains of the company by Superior Judge William S. McMaster.
