And even when they stayed quietly inside, in bed, police dragged them out to face one court or another. Johnny Genaro. notorious freelance gunman, for instance, was pulled from his peaceful slumbers by raiding detectives who hustled him to jail where he will await trial as a vagrant. Probe ‘‘Bail Trust” A county grand jury continued its deliberations concerning racketeers while a federal grand jury waa organized to hear reported sensational evidence about an alleged underworld ‘'bail trust,” organized to get criminal cohorts of ‘‘Scarface Al” Capone out of jail almost as coon as they got in. Federal agents summoned eleven fitnesses Ub testify concerning reports that Ralph Capone, brother of “Scarface,” was the backer of a bail bond concern accused of having “cornered” the bond business in the Untied States commisisoner's court. One Gets Business Court records revealed the John T. Lynn agency, representing the Grand Central Surety Company of New York, since April 4 had supplied bonds totalling $406,650 in 233 yases. Sept. 25.—South Bend officials today continued to question George Sherman Myers, 40, former convict, who three times has confessed he attacked and murdered 8-year-old Marverine Appel, and twice has repudiated his admissions. Police have regarded Myers as mentally unbalanced. Mrs. Eula Appel, mother of the slain child, has identified Myers as the man who had watched her children at play before the kidnaping of Marverine.

JUDGE LENIENT IN BABY CASE Suspended Sentence for Abandoning Mother. Miss Rose Carpenter, 20, of 1713 Montcalm street, today is under suspended sentence following trial before Juvenile Judge Frank J. Lahr on a charge of abandoning her baby a month ago in the Union station. Mother of an illegitimate child, the youthful parent told Lahr she abandoned the baby because she “was up against it” and “took a chance on finding the child a good home” by thrusting it into the hands of a porter and making her escape. The child was held at the Indanapolis orphans home. Lahr found Miss Carpenter guilty of child neglect, suspending a six months sentence at the Indiana woman's prison. mm|p| POWELL SiGN CO.

Sept. 25.—The grand jury investigating the existence of an alleged system of selling public offices has subpenaed every Tammany leader in Manhattan’' twenty-three assembly districts. Hiram C. Todd, special prosecutor, revealed today. They are wanted for questioning regarding the Tammany system of picking candidates for the bench. But before they are allowed to testify they will be asked to sign waivers of immunity, and if they consider that an “insult,” they can make the most of it, Todd indicated.
