MORAL FITNESS OF CANNON IS UNDER ATTACK Term Is Used in Broader Sense,.No Hint of Lose Living, Says Accuser. / i nitrd PrrH* > BALTIMORE, Sept. 24.—Investigation of the moral fitness of Bishop James Cannon Jr. to ocoupy a position of leadership in the Methodist Episcopal church is the objective of the new formal movement against the militant divine, the Rev. Forest J. Prettyman said today. Prettyman, with the Rev. Costen J. Harrell and the Rev. J. T. MasMn of Richmond, Va., and the Rev. I. P. Martin of Abingdon, Va., recently filed charges aganist Bishop Cannon with Bishop W. N. Ainsworth, Birmingham. Thorough Investigation Prettyman explained he used the phrase “moral fitness” in its largest sense, and not in the restricted popular meaning which connotes loose living. He promised a thorough investigation of all published reports against the bishop, who became especially prominent in 1928 as an outspoken opponent of the presidential candidacy of Governor Alfred E. Smith. “This case,” Prettyman said, “will not be confined to the thrashing out of old straws. There are persons in whose heads there is the idea that it will be a reptition of the Dallas incident of last May, when a group of laymen,headed by Josephus Daniels, former secretary of the navy, brought charges against Bishop Cannon with respect to bucketshop operations.” Praises Nashville Bishop To the letter of Bishop H. M. Dubois, Nashville, Tenn., published on Tuesday, suggesting it might be for the good of all concerned for Cannon to relinquish his church office, Prettyman attributed the widest possible importance. He explained that for a fellow bishop, a co-leader of the Meftiodlst Episcopal church to state such an opinion w r as of extreme significance, since he was sure Bishop Dubois would not have written the letter without good grounds. WORK PRAYERS SLATED Little Flower' Catholic Church to Hold Annual Novena. “Relief for unemployment and the return of general prosperity,” will feature the prayers in the devotions of the annual public novena beginning at the Little Flower Catholic church Thursday night and continuing for nine days. The novena is in preparation for the feast of St. Therese. Services will begin at 8 p. m. nightly and will be conducted by the Rev. Charles Duffey. QUIZ TWO IN ROBBERY Police Believe Ralph Conrad, Marvin Enright Fled Arrest. Police today questioned two men in connection with the allegefT attempt to break into a Standard grocery, Euclid avenue and New York street, Monday night. The men are Ralph Conrad, 24, and Marvin Enright. Police said the men are the two who fled when they nabbed Charles Gibson, 31, of 723 North Alabama street. Gibson, according to police, made a statement implicating the others.

HOOVER TARIFF GROUP STARTS REVISION WORK Commodities Which Received Increased Protection Come Up First. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, Sept. 24.—President Hoover’s new tariff commission, which next month opens a series of eleven hearings, is giving its first attention under the flexible tariff provision to those commodities which received increased protection under the Hawley-Smoot tariff law. Although the commission said there was no significance in the priority given these particular inquiries, the manufacturers of the products concerned will be placed on the defensive and in the position of defending their new rates rather than seeking higher ones. The result may be the first recommendations of the commission will be downward. / In addition, all of the commod-

1 itles on which the hearings will be held are among the sixty referred to | the commission for investigation by the senate. Most of the inquiries j were asked by coalition members who were seeking to have the rates reduced. The more important of these commodities, on all of which the rates were increased by the HawleySmoot act, are straw hats, pig iron, wool felt hats and wood furniture. In announcing the hearings. Chairman Fletcher indicated they will be held on these particular commodities first because the commission's preliminary work on them is further advanced. CITY GROWTH TALKED Wilmeth Advocates Annexation of Small Communities. Belief that many outlying communities should be annexed to the oity of Indianapolis, was expressed by Delbert O. Wilmeth, director of census of Marion county, in an address Tuesday before the Universal Club at the Columbia Club. Wilmeth mentioned Highwood, Rocky Ripple, Shooters Hill, Spring Hill and Woodstock, declaring that territory included in each should be made a part of the growing city.
