Politicians Clutter Air With Raving BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Women may not ever have more sense politically than men, but they never will have less. My state just has emerged from a wild primary campaign. And the funny, funny things that people will do during campaigns! Does it ever strike you that the order of things in general is completely reversed w’hen we approach politics? We do not usually go around bragging about our wisdom, our virtues, our remarkable executive ability. We don't bore everybody to death with facts about our past life, our family history, our successes, our hard luck. If we did, our friends speedily would have nothing more to do with us. Modesty Is Becoming Ordinarily we do not consider it good taste to discuss ourselves too much. A becoming modesty sits upon the average citizen—until he begins to run for office. After that he becomes a veritable inflated windbag. He travels up and down, shouting his own excellencies and telling all and sundry how good he is. He broadcasts his belief in his capabilities and prints his picture in all the papers. Also, for some unexplainable reason, it seems generally understood that no candidate ever shall admit, even to his bosom friend, the possibility of defeat. The psychology of success certainly is worked to death in politics. World of Empty Talk Interview twenty-five candidates and every one of them not only will announce that he has victory in his pocket, but will give you positive figures to prove it. Each will appear so cocksure that It makes your heart ache for one or two reasons—his ultimate disappointment or his ability to deceive himself. The campaign period is filled with more empty talk, more ridiculous boasts, and more positive lies than any other, not barring the fishing season. Do you think we’ll ever bring to politics the good sense, the dignity, the honor, that we bring to other lines of endeavor?
