MAIL PLANE IS CONTROLLED BY ROBOIJEVICE Stabilizers Keep Wings on Even Keel, Guide It Toward Goal. By l ni**r! Prrm CLEVELAND. Sept 13 A ‘robot" device that holds a plane to a set course was demonstrated for the first time on a mail plane today when Edward Couples completed his regular run on the Cleveland-Pitts-feurgh route. Flying a standard, open cockpit plane of the Clifford Ball air lines, Couples made the scheduled round trip flight on time, the device holding the ship on its charted course Without any interference from the pilot. Couples reported. The device, installed in the cockpit, is connected with a stabilizer on each wing, maintaining the plane on an even keel and guiding it in the regulated direction. Known as the "guardianaire automatic control," the device is the invention of Otto Greene of Elyria, O , who has not yet qualified for a pilot's license. Designs Odd Plane tv VEA Service WASHINGTON. Sept. 13.—Guido Fallei has designed a queer aircraft which incorporates the features of an amphibian, a dirigible, a gyropter and an ordinary airplane. The craft has a single wing, a rotating disk-shaped affair filled with gas. This wing aids in lifting the plane and also in checking its descent to earth. Two models have been built and tried out w'ith promising results. Gas Tanks to Float By S EA Seri-ic* ELIZABETH. N. J, Sept. 18.— Floating gasoline refilling stations for seaplanes will be scattered all along the Atlantic coast if plans of a gasoline company materialize. The company launched its first floating filling station here recently. It is powered and can be easily moved from place to place. Markers enable aviators to distinguish the filling stations.
