CITY’S POSTAL RECEIPTS TOP U, S. AVERAGE Indianapolis Decrease Less Than Figures for 50 Largest Offices. Postofßce receipts, generally regarded as a reliable index of general business conditions, have been holding up better in Indianapolis the last four months than in most of the fifty larger cities in which the department made * monthly comparisons. The tables showing receipts in the fifty selected cities for May, June, July and August were made public today, following a charge by Senator Alden W. Barkley (Dem., Ky.) that the figures were being suppressed because they showed a degree of business depression which the Republican party -managers did not wish to face in the congressional campaign. Decrease 12 Per Cent For the fifty larger cities, August receipts were ofT about 12 per cent as compared with August, 1929, but rhe decrease in Indianapolis was only 8.98 per cent for the same period. Only three cities, Hartford, Nashville and Houston showed increases. All were less than 2 per cent. Some of the larger decreases were Jersey City, 23 per cent; Milwaukee, 19; Jacksonville, 17; Kansas City, 15; Detroit, 16; New York, Chicago and Cincinnati, 14. Indianapolis August receipts were $333,871, against $366,747 in August, |929. Comparisons Dropped In July, however, the Indianapolis decrease was 8.15 per cent against a combined decrease for the country of only '’.94. Again in June, Indianapolis showed a decrease of only 4.37 per cent against a national decrease of 4.52. In May the national decrease was 3.32 per cent, against 4.03 for Indianapolis. , Postmaster-General Walter B. Brown denied that the figures had been surpressed. The department merely had discontinued the policy of making the monthly comparisons public, he said.

Urges Repair of Relic Bu United Press RICHMOND, Ind., Sept. 16.—The first schoolhouse erected in Wayne county is not getting enough attention owing to its location, H. G. Coleman, superintendent of the city park, decided. Few local residents and practically no strangers realize its historical importance, he said. He outlined plans for the removal of the building to a spot on a hill 200 feet above the street, and proposes the holes and weakened spots in the logs be repaired, a floor built and benches of the type used when the bulding was in use be installed.
