Mercy Ship Vessel Brings Cargo That May Save Hundreds of Lives in U. S.
A DELEGATION of Indianapolis men met a ship of mercy today in New York city that was unheralded by the fanfare of a welcoming committee. The ship? the Eastern F:..*ce, brought a cargo carrying a bill-of-lading for Indianapolis that may save hundreds of lives. It was a consignment of 40,000 pounds of pancreas from Buenos Aires to be used in the manufacture of insulin for treatment of diabetic persons in the United States by Eli Lilly & Cos. But if the Eastern Prince received no official welcome, it was because few were unaware it is the first importation of pancreas attempted by scientists and chemists. Pancreas glands, obtained from adult cattle, are so perishable that attempts heretofore have not been made to bring them from the Argentine. The Eastern Prince consignment was frozen in Buenos Aires and kept at 5 degrees below zero throughout the ocean voyage. Chemists from the Lilly company left here Monday to meet the Eastern Prince and take every precaution to preserve the potency of the consignment. Refrigerator cars pre-cooled forty-eight hours and packed with dry ice, will bring the containers of pancreas to Indianapolis over the New York Central lines.

ABANDONING OF TRACTION LINES IS DEMANDED Three Must Close Within 90 Days, Mortgage Holders’ Attorneys Declare. Abandonment of three central Indiana interurban lines operated by Elmer W. Stout, receiver, is unavoidable and may be expected within the next sixty or ninety days, attorneys told Superior Judge Joseph M. Milner Monday. Hearing was on a petition of Stout as receiver for the three lines, requesting permission to give operating expenses preference over mortgage bonds. Milner took the matter under advisement. Stout is receiver for the Indianapolis &c Northwestern Traction Company, the Indianapolis, Crawfordsville 8z Danville Electric Railway Company and the Indianapolis <fe Martinsville Rapid Transit Company. Operating deficits of each of the three lines are increasing steadily, and, according to Stout, should have priority over bonds to permit a short-time operation of the lines for public benefit. Attorneys representing trustees under various mortgages indicated they will resist continued operation of the lines at the peril of mortgage holders, asking for immediate halt in operations. f Vibrations of the earth as slight as one-ten-thousandth of an inch are registered on anew recording device installed in a United States government laboratory.
Veteran Minnesota Pike Is Mother of Million Bv Science Sereier BEMIDJI, Minn., Sept. 16. —Minnesota has a grand old fish, one that is recognized by officials of the state game and fish department by a large silver spot in front of her dorsal fin and named Old Silverspot because of it. When first she made her appearance in the nets of the Bemidji hatchery she was a slim little thing weighing twelve pounds. Now she is a fat old lady, tipping the scales at twenty-five pounds, and estimated to be the mother of a million fish. Asa grandmother, her descendants almost are countless. For ten years this wall-eyed pike was caught annually in the nets of the state hatchery, stripped of her eggs, and returned to Minnesota waters. One stripping alone netted close to 300,000 eggs, and from them were hatched 297,000 baby pike. Then during 1928 and 1929 she was not seen at the hatcheries, and was bemoaned as the victim of some fisherman, or of old age But this year mourning for Old Silverspot turned to joy when word was long-distanced to hatchery officials that she was alive and well, taken in a net near Cass lake. They rushed to the scene and found her swimming lazily in a tub. This time her picture was taken, to preserve her record should she not return again. Back In 1923, Sheridan Greig, at that time in charge of the Bemidji hatchery decided that this particular fish should have sendee stripes and so punched a hole in her fin tail. This in no way injures her nor interferes with her swimming.

Ru I nitril Peers PARIS, Sept. 16.—When a Spaniard, Jose Garcia, battered to death with a hatchet a pretty young Parisian stenographer who refused his attentions and then confessed that Just recently he had been released from an asylum, a public outcry began throughout France which may lead to a complete revision of the existing lunacy laws. Doctors, educational experts, social reformers and newspaper editors are joined in the campaign to induce the French parliament to restudy and reshape the existing law of 1838, claiming that there are far too many half-crazy people at liberty, which partly explains the apappalling murder statistics in the country since the World war.
