PRETTY MODEL LINKED TO DEATH OF SENJOYCE Widow Denies Poisoning as Revenge for Attention to Foster Daughter. Bv United Pren CHICAGO, Sept. 15.—Investigation into the death of Senator John T. Joyce, attributed by a coroner’s jury to poisoning, turned today to questioning of a pretty 22-year-old model The model. Bernice Webb, was taken into custody by investigators of me state attorney’s office after they said they learned that she was a guest at the Joyce home five months prior to his death Mrs. Mary Joyce, the widow, remained in seclusion in her gold coast home today in conference with her lawyers, while Isabelle Daly, foster daughter of the Joyces, refused to receive visitors in her apartment. "I’m not afraid of anything that Isabelle may tell authorities,” Mrs. Joyce said Sunday. "They are trying to make out that I poisoned John Joyce because he had been too friendly with Isabelle. That’s not true.” "If John Joyce was anything more than a kind foster-father to the girl I had no knowledge of it.” • Joyce was found dead the morning of Aug. 16 and Mrs. Joyce immediately made charges that he had been slain by political rivals. GOLD PAVES STREETS Professional Beggars Do Very Very Well, Thank You, in London. Bv United Press LONDON. Sept. 15—Streets of London still are paved with gold—as Dick Whittington believed—if one is lucky enough to be a professional beggar and pick up its wealth for the asking. There are beggars' "pitches” in London which yield as much as $5,000 a year to their ' proprietors.’’ And some pavement spots on which they pursue their calling under the thin disguise of match selling are known to be worth $lO to $25 a day.
