Average of twenty utilities was 84.66. off .82. .Average of forty bonds was 97.27. un .12. and anew high for 1930. Bu United Press NEW YORK. Sept. s.—lnspired, by evidence of public participation entering the stock market, prices today moved forward 1 to 4 points, many issues going through their highs on the movement. Dealings picked up in activity as the day progressed until Thursday’s sales total was crossed in the afternoon. Sales were still relatively small. United States Steel swept ahead In the last few minutes of trading after exhibiting strength all day. Its impetus on the upside attracted further buying into other pivotal shares and stocks generally were making new highs for the day in the closing trading. Rubbers Advance Gains of 1 to more than 4 points were made by Eastman Kodak, American Can, National Biscuit, Radio Corporation, Trans-America, United Aircraft, General Motors, Foster Wheeler, Checker Cab, J. I. Case. Parmelee Transportation, Hershey, Missouri Pacific and a long list of others. Group advances were noted in the rubbers, coal stocks and tractions. Utilities gained under the lead of Consolidated Gas; rails were firm with few exceptions; oils perked up in the last few minutes; steels were strong; motor shares firmed up; foods were in demand, led by National Biscuit; American Telephone sung ahead in the last minute, leading the communications. Amusements Higher Amusements gained under Loew’s. Universal Pictures soared nearly ten points. Ward Baking A was again bid up, bringing out rumors that anew group including George K. Morrow, president of United Cigar Stores and chairman of Gold Dust, would take over the company. Traction stocks and bonds moved higher on news that the way was being cleared for unification of the New York City lines. Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke issues soared to new highs since 1928, with gains of more than 12 points. Other coal shares were firmer on Bradstreet’s reference to improved business in the coal industry. Weekly trade reviews were much more optimistic in tone than they have been in months. Their publication brought urgent short covering into many issues. Shorts in Auburn were run in and the stock soared nearly 10 points.

WHEAT PRICES ADVANCE WITH STRONG TONE Sentiment Turns Blillish on Unexpected Buying at Liverpool. Bu Unitrd Press CHICAGO, Sept. s.—Snowing a decidedly stronger undertone, wheat closed sharply higher on the Board of Trade today. Sentiment took a bullish turn on the unexpected buying at Liverpool and the better export demand. News, as a whole, was more bullish with pessimism evaporating in the general cheerfulness. Corn was more unsettled, advancing with wheat early, but selling off later, especially the deferred months. Undoing of spreads, selling wheat and buying corn, with proft-taking were factors. Oats followed the major grains. Exports Good At the close wheat was ITs to 2 cents higher; corn was % to % cent lower, and oats were % 'to % cent higher. Provisions were 25 to 35 points higher. Liverpool continued its advance to close l'is to 1% cents higher, an active inquiry and much short covering being the main influences there. The export business was reported as very good overnight. Cash prices were 1 to 1% cents higher. Receipts were 13 cars. Corn advanced sharply with wheat at the start, with September acting tight and the deferred months showing an inclination to drag. Oats Are Firm The advance met profit-taking sales, but at mid-session prices were still a good fraction higher. The tone remained strong. Cash prices were % to 1 cent higher. Receipts were 147 cars. Oats were up a fraction at the start on the strength in the other grains, but the action was small and at mid-morning the prices showed only small gains. There was some local selling on the advance, but the undertone was firm. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 79 cars.

In the Cotton Markets
(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, Sept. s.—Cotton carried oil this morning until a further advance of 10 points had bene scored. Sentiment in trading circles has changed, and higher prices are expected. Members average guess is that the government estimate will be reduced about 200,000 bales. There was support to the market in the first hour, but it was clear that the south was selling more freely than yesterday. The tropical storm lost its terror and is not expected to go into the gulf. Avery cheerful tone appers in trade news. Wall street covering, which some traders have been expecting, had failed to put in its appearance up to noon. Everywhere we hear of a holding movement in the south. So far, however, with foreign connections seen to be handling most of the new cotton. In the second hour of the afternoon the tone of the market was still very strong. Prices 7 to 8 points up from yesterday. Sentiment very bullish. NEW ORLEANS High. Low. Close.
