{IO.OOO RANSOM 1 COLLECTED BY KILLERMIURKE **eer Runner Reported to Have Paid Kidnapers Big Sum. CHICAGO. Sept. s.—Fred Burke, notorious killer and bank robber, was reported today to have kidnaped Harold Cusak, reputed beer runner, and released him for SIO,OOO ransom, after holding him captive for several days. Four gunmen, including Burke, who had two sawed-off shotguns strapped to his side, kidnaped the beer runner from a Chicago saloon, it was reported. At the summer resort cabin he pleaded with Burke not to kill him, but insisted that he would be unable to raise SIOO,OOO. Burke has been known by police throughout the nation as the most dangerous man alive since he wantonly murdered a traffic policeman in St. Joseph, Mich., last DecemI ber. While posing as a respectable citizen, police found he had committed scores of robberies. An arsenal and a cache of . $319,850 was found in his home in an exclusive section of St. Joseph, Mich. He also has been identified as the killer of the seven George (Bugs) Moran gangsters in the St. Valentine massacre of 1929 iit Chicago and the slayer of Frankie Yale, New York gang leader. WIDEN THE STRAND London Completes Project Costing $7,500,000. th/ United Press LONDON, Sept. 5.—A job begun thirty-five years ago, which has cost more than $7,500,000, virtually is completed here, but in a few years I may have to be done all over again. r The task involved widening of the Strand, known to millions of tourists, was undertaken when it became obvious that the many “bottle neck” obstructions would seriously hamper movement of normally increasing traffic. Experts now predict that in another twenty years traffic difficulties on the Strand will have increased to such an extent that the new width of eighty feet from wall 4 to wall may not be sufficient.
