Eight miles of detour? were lifted on state roads this week, the bulletin of the state highway department set out today. Road oii was laid on 18, Marion to Roll; 32, Anderson to Boone county line; 46, Nashville to Columbus. and 56, Madison to Blocher. General road conditions were listed as follows: Ro*d 7—Closed between Wirt end North Vernon. Tbrou*h trHtc detour over lUte roads. IndlanapolU-Madisoa uafitc go via Road 29. Road —Detour from eleven pules north of Oreenfleld to Junction with Road 67 1* five miles. Bridge run-arounds at two and one-half and three and one-half miles aouth of Columbia City. Detour between Columbia City and Merrtam Is ten miles. Detour one mile north of Howe to Sturgis, Mich.. Is five miles. D. 8. Road 12—Detour during day at Hiller is two and one-half miles. Although open at night, traffic must drive slow. Detour In Indiana Harbor is .ope pijle. Road 16—New pavement open to traffic from Warsaw to north of New Paris except three miles of gravel Just noftfl of Milford. Traffic should drive slow at overhead approaches at New Parts account of loose gravel. Road 21— Detour from Ohio line to one and one-half miles north of Boston Is eight miles. V. 8. Road 24— Detour from Five Points to Ohio line is seven miles. U. S. Road 27—Drive slow account surface treatment —both north and south of Liberty. Bridge run-around Just north of Deerfield. Bridge run-around one mile south of Brvant. Detour south of Geneva is three and one-half miles. Detour from Ft. Wayne to De Kalb-Alien county line is fifteen miles: twelve miles of which is pavement. Bridge run-around at two and one-half miles west of Auburn. Road 29— Detour north of Waugh is two miles. Drive carefully oast grading gangs between Burlington and MiddleforX. FILM SETS ARE COMPOSED TO MATCH_MUSIC Romberg and Hammerstein Win in Battle for New Idea. Bv United Press HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 22,—Film makers were demanding music for pictures long before Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II came to Hollywood, but it remained for these ingenious gentlemen to demand metrical motion picture sets—scenery built for music. The idea, entirely new in motion pictures, was introduced in a small way in “Viennese Nights,’ ’an original production by Romberg, the composer, and Hammerstein 11, librettist. Now the “music” sets are being developed more exactly for the second picture written by these two famous showmen. Apple Orchard Just Right Among other things, the set designers have found an apple orchard which is exactly eight music measures long; they have built a New York penthouse living room that is just four bars of notes wide, and apple pickers’ ladders which are six notes in height. Romberg and Hammerstein work on the theory that a picture is musically a unit, as a stage musical production always has been regarded, and they provide a continuous and exactly measured musical background for each scene and every speech and action. Shied Away From Flans This all looked very complicated to unmusical technicians, who shied from the plans of the composer and his librettist partner.
