WAR ON LIQUOR IS ONE WEAPON IN INDIA REVOLT Women Fling Themselves Over Threshold to Keep Out Buyers. Tkii ii the f.orth In ■ aerie* of Are ■neenaared article. on India hr Webb Miller, who reeentle returned from an tilendrd inteatitation in that roontre. BY WEBB MILLER United Fret* Staff Correapondent LAHORE. Aug. 21.—Women fling themselves across the thresholds of liquor shops to prevent entrance. Others help their men chop down thousands of toddy palm trees from Which liquor is extracted. Women participate in massed attacks upon liquor shops smashing the fittings and stock. Men and women attack carts carrying liquor to the shops and burst open the barrels and 3et fire to the liquor. 71 lose scenes are occurring in scores of towns in India in the campaign of the Nationalists to make India dry. In the struggle with Britain for freedom Gandhi made total prohibition for India one of the eleven cardinal points of his program. For the first time in the history of India women arc playing a prominent part in a political struggle. They are concentrating their activities upon prohibition. Drinking Is Prevalent By religion and custom India nominally is a prohibition country. The religions of both the Mohammedans and Hindus impose abstinence from liquor. But the advance of modern wrest- j ern civilization brought in its train j widespread use of liquor and drunk- ; enness. There now are some 50.000 i liquor shops in British India alone. Drinking is mast prevalent in the great industrial centers. The Nationalist campaign for j prohibition has a three-fold pur- j pase—to cut ofl revenue which the i government of India derives from the liquor traffic: to enforce the ( tenets of their religion and to promote the health and well-being of the nation. By his religion and by personal conviction Gandhi is an ardent dry. Shops Arc Picketed According to my observations during a 4.000-mile trip through India the movement toward pro- ; Jiibition is making much headway j and considerably decreasing sales' and the government's revenue. The most extensive and effective weapon of the Nationalists is pick- | cting of shops by women volunteers | who stand outside the place and 1 implore people not to aid the gov- ! ernment by buying liquor or harangue would-be customers regarding the evils of drinking. Besides direct action against the use of liquor Nationalist women are carrying on an educational campaign somewhat similar to the campaign of the W. C. T. U. in the United States years ago. „ . | How to recognize a low blood count . Blood Is Lite! You cannot count ' vour own red-blood-cells —that is technical! But you should know that they are the "ships” that sail in the blood and carry nourishment to all parts of the body. Also, they remove impurities from the tissues. You can recognize a lowered count by the way you look and feel—such as body weakness, lack of appetite, underweight, paleness, sallow complexion, bolls and pimples. They may indicate that you need S.S.S. S.S.S.—the great blood tonic—stimulates the blood-building organs to supply the necessary red-cells.
