TYPE IS SET BY LONG DISTANCE BY NEWDEVICE Newspaper Chain Now Using Invention to Speed Up Printing Process. Bv Vnitrd Pren , WHITE PLAINS. N. Y-. Aug. 11.— The teletype6tter, a device which can set type by electricity at great distances, has been put into successful application on a chain of newspapers, it was learned today. The Westchester County Publishers, Inc., announced that the invention had been used with satisfactory results on a string of publications In this country. The instrument, invented by Walter W. Worey nd developed with the collaboration of Frank E. Gannett, publisher; Edward E. Kleinschmidt and others, makes it possible for news stories to be sent out by telegraphic impulses and set in type almost instantly in distant cities. Method Even Speedier It gives newspapers using the device an even speedier method of assembling news than the present systems in this country, which already are the fastest in the world. The papers in the Westchester group, which is headed by J. Noel Macy, are the Yonkers Statesman, Mt. Vernon Daily Argus, New Rochelle Standard-Star, Port Chester Daily Item, Tarrytown Daily News, Ossining Citizen-Sentinel and White Plains Daily Press. The publishers described the new method as follows: "When the teletypesetter is in operation at the head office in White Plains, the keys of the typesetting machine are depressed as if by magic and the impulses telegraphed from the keyboard of the distant sending machine are instantly reflected on the keyboard of the receiving typesetters. Bring Down Matrices “As the keys arc tripped electrically, they bring down the matrices from which the lead letters are cast into a line of type as in ordinary typesetting. “To transmit those imputes over the wire the operator at the sending end strikes letter keys on a keyboard like a typewriter and code combinations of holes are punched in a paper tape. That paper tape, passing between electrical contacts, sends the impulses out on the wire and they are received in the newspaper offices on a machine which repunches the code holes in a similar paper tape. The repunched tape is passed through an electrified typesetting machine, where the impulses from the distance keyboard are automatically transferred to the corresponding keys on the typesetting keyboard.”

Bu t ailed Prtts LOUISVILLE, Ky„ Aug. 11.— Northern Kentucky bore the scars today of a quarter-million dollar storm which leveled crops and buildings between here and Lexington. An eighty-mile wind, accompanied by severe electrical disturbances, uprooted trees, tore the roofs off houses, disrupted communcations, but at the same time did some good in that it broke a serious heat wave of many week's duration. STLYE 'PIRATES’ FREED French Dressmakers Ask Deportation of Copyists. ‘ PA&I& Pr Aug. 11. The Paris Dressmakers’ Syndicate decided today not to press damage suits against Miss Ida Helen Oliver, Chicago, and Mrs. Caroline Davis, New Orleans, who were questioned Saturday in connection with ’•piracy” of the styles of famous French fashion houses. The syndicate insisted, however, that the government deport Americans and other foreigners who may be proved guilty of copying French dress creations. Order French law “dress piracy” may be classed as theft but it would be difficult, authorities said, to fix damages arising from reproduction of gowns abroad.
