the butt of every Syracuse joke, Oakie naively butts a few jokes himself, until, through an unexpected legacy, he is enabled to gratify one ambition, to see how the world on the other side of the “big pond” lives. On the boat he meets O nger Rogers, the charming object of operations for a pair of crooks, and also a pair of sophisticated gold-diggers. Mistaken for a famous engineer supposed to be traveling incognito, Oakie finds himself the center of attraction, all of which is very confusing to the modest boy from the backwoods. Through a series of amusing misadventures, Oakie is said to wend his way to success in love, and the story ends in a convulsing climax, that proves the hero to be not so dumb as he looks. The Publix cast in “Carnival of Fun” supporting Charlie Davis and his boys are Sammy Lewis and Patti Moore in “Fun on the Steps"; Marietta, late star of George White’s “Scandals”; Clyde Hager, the barker; Jim the bear, Sonny O’Brien, the talented troubadour, and the Frpd Evans sightseers. Ed Resener will conduct the band in an overture entitled Il’Guarany.” Dessa Byrd will be at the organ and a Paramount sound news will complete the bill. v nun Other theaters today offer: “Good Intentions” at the Apollo, “With Byrd at the South Pole” at the Ohio, “Raffles” at the Palace, and “Wild Company at the Lyric. Mann, 1928 southern campaign director for Mr. Hoover, that he will seek uninstructed delegates to the next Republican national convention largely had been dissipated today in the harmony over the change in party leadership. “Mann’s a general without an army,” said one of the President’s closest advisers. “Mr. Hoover will be unanimously nominated at the next convention,” said James Frances Burke, counsel of the Republican national committee. “If he is not nominated, everyone knows the nomination will not be worth tissue paper. “What is the necessity of saying anything about Colonel Mann?” It was evident from Burke's petition and that taken by others here Thursday to attend the party executive committee that their course will
be fco work quietly to prevent uninstructed delegates from the south. Instead, they will aim to have delegates chosen who are pledged to Mr. Hoover for a second term. It will be a contest behind the scenes and no display will be made of it. This is to be the policy of the newly installed party managers, Senator Simeon D.
