NOT SWISS, EITHER City Baby Yodels at 14 Months
FATHERS and mothers of Indianapolis who have prayed for the millennium —a babe wV >o sings itself to sleep—can take lessons from the parents of Mary Helen Isvlin, 14-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Havlin, 1316 North Gale street, and the only “yodeling” babe in the world. Mary Helen yodels herself into dreamiond, yodels for her milk, yodels when she’s happy and yodels when she’s mad. Her “Yo-lay-ee-lay-e-lu" started a month ago while her daddy rocked her to sleep.
Havlin is a yodeler of parts, too, and as he rocked Mary Helen he yodeled for dear life, in the hopes that her fretting would be drowned in the Land of Nod. You know how it is. Rocking back and forth and sleep Just won't come—nothing but squalls. But this night Mary Helen watched her dad's persimmon “yolay" puckers in wonder and then suddenly she opened her mouth and gurgled her first yodel. Her parents marveled as sleep followed her Alpine chords. Friends reported the wonder to “Believe-It-Or-Not" Ripley and so Thursday in The Times Mary Helen broke into print with a “Yo-lay-eee-lu.” But like all artists. Mary Helen is temperamental. Interviewers attempting to get a lung tremolo after her afternoon's snooze, drew a blank. “Sometimes she yodels with the radio singers. Come back almost anytime and she’ll do it for you,” explained her mother. But Mary Helen seemed bored with the attempts to get her to purse her lips and her only “goodby” yodel was the “glub-üb-bub” as she drank her milk.
