PERRY ESTATE SECOND IN 1929 insurance paid City Residents Last Year Received $5,978,049 in Policy Claims. Indianapolis citizens received 13,978,049 from life insurance companies of the nation in 1929. This figure was disclosed today with the release of the thirtieth annual “Life Payments Number” o. the National Underwriter, weekly insurance newspaper. Heirs of JUnes A. Perry, late president of the Indianapolis baseos 11 club, received the second largest single amount from a policy outing 1929 when *75,000 was paid iL them following the death of Mr. Perry. The largest amount. $150,000, was paid to unnamed beneficiaries. Ranking eleventh in population in the country, Indiana also ranked eleventh in the total life insurance paid out in 1929 among the states with $57,600,000 being turned over to policyholders and beneficiaries. The largest death claim paid by the insurance companies in Indiana during 1929 was $555,000 to the heirs of the estate of Aron Borastein, prominent realtor of Gary, Ind. A major portion of Mr. Bornstein’s insurance covered loans in connection with real estate mortgages. In the payment of the $555000 the insurance company delivered $105,000 to the widow and the the remainder was set up as a reserve and to cover property mortgages. Indianapolis ranked twenty-sev-enth in cities of the country in amounts paid in 1929. It was topped by Columbus, 0., with $6,083,779 in claims. Gary, Terre Haute, Evansville and South Bend ranked in order in Indiana with million-dollar payment totals made in life insurance. The underwriters’ weekly shows that the estate of Thomas Taggart, Democratic politician, was paid $36,000 at the time of his death. It lists the following large policies paid out in Indianapolis during the year: G. B. Clippinger, $59,500; Herman N. Arens, $33,100. “The annual life insurance payments in 1929 exceed the annual wages of the food industry, the textile, paper, printing, petroleum, coal, railroad and transportation industry with $2,197,482,574 paid in the United States and Canada. This was a gain of $140,443,682 over the 192S claim payments,” the weekly asserted. “The 1929 payments equal the United States government’s income and profit tax returns in 1929, while it is over half the federal body’s receipts from all sources,” the report shows. William B. Ward, New Rochelle, N. Y„ late president of the Ward Baking Company, left the largest insurance estate when policies totaling $5,000,000 were paid at the time of his death. Thomas E. Houston of Cincinnati, 0., prominent coal man, was second with $1,845, A 4B. Mr. Bornstein ranked thirteenth in the list of heavy payments made during the year.
