Miniature Golf —No. 1 Putting’s the Thing That Makes or Mars-Golfer
WHETHER Americans will become better golfers because of the thousands of miniature golf courses that have sprung up all over the country In the last year is hard to say. But certainly, if those who are beginning the game in this way and if those who are among its newer disciples go about it correctly, the country at least should have more good putters. Putting is actually the most important part of the game of a good player, although it is usually the easiest part for the beginner. Just how good he is going to be usually J- measured by how well he plays on the greens. Examples prove this point. Bobby Jones is called the best putter in the game. It is significant that he

also is the best player of us all Golfers still are talking about his forty-yard famous putt on the last hole at Interlachen, which assured him the national open championship again. Walter Hagen, when at the height of his glory, was given credit for being as great a putter as Jones. That he does not play as well as he used to, is because, for some reason or other, he has lost some of his putting touch. Where for years Jones and Hagen have been recognized as the two best golfers in the world, a newcomer now threatens to take Hagen’s place. He is Horton Smith, and he is a specialist in his play on and around the green. NEXT: Importance of good patting.

BOOZE THREAT DISCOUNTED BY REARADMIRAL 3illard Scoffs at Rumor of Giant New Rum Row on Great Lakes. Du Krrit>v-Howard ~Seic*V<iver AUinnrt WASHINGTON, July 25.—Reports tljat organized liquor smugglers plan establishment of anew “rum row’’ on the Great Lakes to counteract the new Canadian law was scoffed at today by Rear Admiral Frederick C. Billard, commandant of the United States coast guard, on returning from a two weeks’ inspection trip of the service there. Although admitting it is too early to determine just how effective the new Canadian law, which became operative on May 31, will prove, Admiral Billard declared setting up of a ‘ rum row” on the lax?s similar to the old North Atlantic .‘quor base will not be possible. “The new Canadian law however, may lead to increased smuggling activities in the Atlantic coast,” Billard said. Under the new Canadian export law, nc vessel can clear for any United States port with liquor or other contraband cargo, but must land the cargo at some foreign port. It is Billard’s belief that the operation of the law may result in vessel’s landing their liquor at some French possession in the North At-
