SHEET AND TUBE HEAD ATTACKED IN MERGER WAR Attempt to Show Purnell Promoted Deal to Win Big Bonus. B “y6'uN<jSTOWN. 0., July 24. An attempt to show that Frank Purnell, president of Youngstown Sheet and Tube, had a personal interest in promoting the merger of Sheet and Tube with Bethlehem Steel Corporation, was planned today by forces fighting the combine. Suits of anti-merger allies, led by Cyrus S. Eaton, prominent Sheet and Tube stockholder, are being heard by Judge David Jenkins in common pleas court. The Eaton allies seek an injnctio to halt the merger, charging it was unfair to stockholders. Facts pertinent to Purnell’s part in the case, as brought out in previous testimony include: 1. Testimony of Eugene G. Grace, Bethlehem president, that Purnell probably will be made a vice-presi-dent if the merger goes through. 2. Evidence that the six Bethlehem vice-presidents received ‘‘incentive bonuses” last year totaling $1,402,032. Two of them re-eived bonuses of $378,664 for the year. Judge Jenkins Wednesday ordered Bethlehem attorneys to produce figures showing the salaries of these vice-presidents. It already has been testified that Grace, whose bonus totaled approximately a million dollars a year, received only $12,000 a year in salary. Purnell has testied that he knew of a bonus plan in the Bethlehem organization, but “did not know its details.” He has denied an allegation that he was promised a $300,000-a-year job with Bethlehem if the merger was ratified.

This animal, the behemoth from the tangled jungles of Ceylon, this colossal monster of the underbrush, whose trumpet calls sound from Kenya to its mate, will sport for the benefit of small boys and their elders, together with other performers with the Ringling and Barnum and Bailey circus for afternoon and night performances, Friday, July 25, at Keystone avenue show grounds. Yasso is the name of this erudite elephant, and she caps her sheaf of tricks by almost completely swallowing the head of her trainer, lifting the pendant booy from the ground and gingerly stalking about the hippodrome oval with the limp body hanging from her massive jaws. and 7 p. m., and at 2 p. m. the first fanfare of trumpets and ruffle of drums will usher in the pageant which precedes the regular performance. The show comes here from Dayton upon four trains, the first section bearing the preliminary essentials to the circus encampment of thirty tents being scheduled to arrive before rosy-fingered dawn has tinted the morning landscape. Throughout tomorrow a downtown ticket office will be maintained at the Clark and Cade drug store where tickets may be bought at the same prices charged at the show grounds. Elephants, forty, count ’em, forty, will as usual supply the heavy fodder for the feast of the eye.

SHERIFF POST TO BE PRIZE IN PITCHCONTEST Friends All Their Lives Until Each Ran for Same Office to Settle Issue. Bu United Press HERKIMER, N. Y., July 24. Daniel V. Strobel and Fred Sauer will play pitch tonight, as they have countless times since boyhood. But tonight’s games will be more important than the others because the winner’s prize is the Republican nomination for sheriff of Herkimer county. So, instead of playing by themselves with just a couple of “the boys” looking on, Dan and Fred will engage in combat formally at 6:30, three games of eleven points each, and no kibitzers allowed. County Republican leaders, who

have consented to backing the winner, will be looking on. There will be no ill feelings after it’s over, because Dan and Fred have been friends all their lives, and the simultaneous decision to nm for sheriff was their first difference. They are quite willing that the cards settle the matter for them. Meanwhile, another contest will test out the potential county purchasing agent’s qualifications as a pinochle expert. Three candidates for the appointive position, Marshall L. Hyde, John Frank and Maurice Kraus, will see who can meld fastest and most frequently. The best man will get the Republican support.
