MOVER TO GIVE AIO IN FIGHT ON SENATOR WALSH President Is Expected to Play Important Part in Montana Campaign. BY PAUL R. MALLON Pr** Staff C.rrepod*nt WASHINGTON. July 17.—President Hoover's aid is expected to be giver., unofficially at least, in the Republican fight to defeat Senator Thomas J. Walsh, influential Democrats leader from Montana, con- ! doctor of the oil investigations and an ardent dry from an apparently moistening state. While the Presidents proposed August tr.p to Glacier and Yellowstone national paries in and near Montana apparently is only a recreational venture, authorities in charge of the Republican congressional campaign here believe they can use it decidedly to their advantage. Many to See President If the President had chosen but one state to visit, he could not have chosen better for Republican campaign purposes, they say. Although speeches have been ta- ' booed for the trip, it was learned today Mr. Hoover may stop of! in Montana to dedicate the Roosevelt memorial highway arch. In addition. Mr. Hoover s trip will take him across the state in such a way *bat he probably will visit: every .urge town in daylight and! have an opportunity to meet Re- i publican leaders, the people . and ! legal city officials. It is not unlike- | ly that the Republican senatorial J candidate chosen in Tuesday's pri- : mar;,'. Justice Albert J. Galen, will; aopear with Mr. Hoover at these: functions. Important to G. O. P. The methods by which Galen was j persuaded by Republican leaders to run is an evidence of the intense desire of national Republican leaders to win back a senate seat in Montana. Galen was selected at a meeting in Great Falls and induced to resign his life position on the bench to enter the primary. Walsh has made many enemies who would like to see him defeated. Harry F. Sinclair of Teapot Dome j notoriety, is said to have remarked he would be willing to spend his 1 g fortune to ’‘defeat the man who isent me here.” / Walsh also has been a leadbr with I Senator Norris <Rep„ Neb.) in congressional activities against power, interests. Galen Is Nominated BUTTE, Mont., July 17.—Montana Republicans have chosen Albert J. j Galen, associate justice of the state supreme court, to oppose Senator I Thomas J. Walsh in the November! election. Galen’s lead in the primaries over his opponent, O. H. P. Shelley, pub- I lisher from Red Lodge, stood early today at 14,824. or more than Shelley's entire vote’. The figures, including returns from 767 precincts, Were: Galen 28.211: Shelley. 13,387. Walsh won his place on the ballot without opposition, although a large courtesy vote was given him.

farms, the agriculture department estimated it cost farmers an average of $124 to produce a bushel of wheat in 1929. This year's costs are believed virtually the same except possibly for a slight reduction in labor cost. Wheat sold in Chicago this week at 88 cents for July delivery, but the average grain belt farmer receives 20 cents less than this figure after freight rates are deducted. On the farm, therefore, wheat now is worth about 68 cents, or only slightly more than one-half its production cost. With the foreign demand slack and the 1930 crop estimated by the department at one million bushels more than a year ago, the drive for new action by the administration to help the wheat grower continued today. However, there were no indications of success, at least until the return here Monday of Chairman Legge of the federal farm board. Senators Capper and Allen 'Rep.,
Kan ), after*a conference with Secretary of Agriculture Hyde, arranged to meet with Legge Monday to urge that the farm board bolster the market by buying and holding from the market millions of bushels of the crop now being harvested. Wheat prices now are the lowest since 191*. while the prices of things the farmer buys are about 50 per cent higher, other agriculture department figures showed. Grain farmers been hit hardest by the price slump, but other agricultural commodities also are off sharply.
