SAMMY MANDELL, AL SINGER READY FOR TITLE SCRAP
Champ Has Difficulty Making Weight Limit; Challenger Is Favorite Little Interest Shown in Battle for Lightweight Crown; Boxing Experts Favor Sammy, Despite 7 to 5 Odds on Bronx Boy. BY FRANK GETTY United PrtH Sport* Editor NEW YORK, July 17.—With the lightweight championship o l the world at stake, but with singularly little Interest over the outcome, Sammy Msndell of Rockford. 111., and A1 Singer of the Bronx will meet in a fifteen-round bout at Yankee Stadium tonight. The deplorable endings of recent championship bouts have caused a widespread indifference as to the outcome of this contest, although New York fight fans are interested in Singer's winning the title, and have made him a 7 to 5 favorite. It is doubtful if Madison Square Garden's optimistic estimate of a $200,000 "gate'’ will be realized.
Mandell. the champion, who has defended his title only three times since he won it on a Chicago decision from Rocky Kansas of Buffalo in 1D26, has rightly been reported as having great difficulty in making the lightweight limit of 135 pounds. Sammy “Dried Out” Sammy has been forced to go without liquids since he wound up, training at Orangeburg Wednesday,! and the titieholder was to be put| through a severe drying-out process | before weighing in this afternoon. Despite this handicap, Mandell figures to defeat Singer, who is far from his equal as an experienced boxer. The Bronx boy is no great shucks as a hitter, and Mandell has weathered punches of many a more formidable foe. With fair weather promised for this evening, the bout is due to go on at 10 p. m., eastern daylight savings time. New Rule in Use Mandell and Singer vill fight under the new foul rule now in force in New York state, whereby a low blow will not disqualify the perpetrator. Each fighter Is required to protect himself, and if he stays down from the effects of a low punch he will be counted out. A fighter striking a deliberate low punch will be penalized by the loss of the round m whicn the blow is struck. A belief that Mandell has passed his prime and that Singer is coming along rapidly to the fore, coupled with the difficulty which the champion has found in making weight, led to the Bronx boy being installed a favorite. Otherwise, Singer would not be considered in Sammy's company on their records. BOUT ON AIR AT 8 Ku United Pres NEW YORK. July 17—The radio broadcast of the Mandell-Singer lightweight championship fight at Yankee stadium tonight will go on the air at 10 (8 p. m. Indianapolis time) over the National Broadcasting Company's nation-wide hookup. Graham McNamee will give a blow-by-blow description. while George Hicks will comment on the bout between rounds. Lott and Allison in Cup Tilts Young Stars Get Singles Assignments Against Italians. Bu United Press , PARIS, July 17.—The singles drawings for the interzone Davis cup finals between the United States and Italy were held at noon todav at the racing club here. Wilmer Allison of Austin, Tex., was drawn to play Giorgio de j Stefani in the singles Friday, while George Lott of Chicago will play Baron Henry L. de Morpurgo. In the final singles matches Sunday the pairings will be reversed, Lott playing De Stefani and Allison meeting De Morpugo. Drawings for the doubles match Saturday will be made twenty-four hours before the game, it was announced. The American team is regarded as an almost certain winner over Italy, and the matches held interest chiefly as a test of the United States’ prospects in the challenge round with France. While Big Bill Tilden definitely is out of the interzone matches, there still is a possibility that he may join the American team for the challenge round against France. He rejected an invitation to play against Italy because of a contract to report Davis cup matches for a newspaper syndicate. If the, Italian-American series indicates the United States’ chances against France depend upon Tilden’s presence on the team, it is virtually certain that the Philadelphian will cancel his writing contract or that the U. S. L. T. A. will waive the player-writer rule. Umpire George Hildebrand, serving in his eighteenth season in the American League, passed the 2,500mark in games worked last week.
