AVIATION GAINS SAFETY IN U. S. EVERTJONTH Only One Fatality in Each 1,062.677 Miles During Last of 1929. Bjf Bmpps-Hortard Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON. July IS —Month by month, flying grows safer in the United States. During the last six months of 1929 there was one fatal accident for every 1,062,677 miles flown on scheduled transport lines. During the last six months of 1928 thee was one fatality for every 884.120 miles flown in scheduled services. These figures have been tabulated by the aeronautics branch of the department of commerce. For miscellaneous flying operations. Including student instruction and experimental flying, the fatality rate is considerably higher, and it mounted last year instead fi P declining. During the last six months of 1929 there was a fatal accident for every 375.00D miles flown, while during the same period of 1928 the rate was one fatality to 290.244 miles. Many Accidents There were, of course, a great many more accidents than there were fatalities. While only fifteen persons were killed on scheduled transport lines from July to December. 1929. there were seventy-six accidents on these lines, and there were 924 accidents in all types of civil aeronautics. There were fewer accidents in the latter part of 1928. but there also were fewer miles flown. Totaling all accidents, fatal and otherwise, in all types of civil flying, the tabulation shows 78.308 miles flown per accident in the 1928 period and 85,433 miles flown per accident in the 1929 period. Hike Not Proportionate If accidents had increased in the fame proportion as number of miles flown, this last figure would have been 110,000. instead of 85.433. While the depart ’nt has not revealed the cause or individual accidents. it has announced totals for the year since it has been investigating them and these show that in 1929, 55.75 per cent of a'l accidents were due to errors of personnel; 1895 per cent to power plant failures; 4 12 per cent to weather, and the remainder to airport and terrain, darkness and doubtful causes. BBsSIEBBESB EBbhSBSSBBI “Just a few words of praise of your medicine. Nothing gave me relief and health as Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound did. I am a practical nurse and was so rundown that I was unable to work. 1 used to suffer agonies at times and would have to lie down the biggest part of the day. After two bottles of Vegetable Compound I felt better. Now I have used ten bottles and feel fine. I recommend it to many of my patients.”—Mrs. Florence Johnson, R. R. 3, Chetopa, Kansas.
