ARRESTS IN DRY CASES CROWING 68,186 Held in Final Year of Rule by Treasury. f V T PII/M Prrn WASHINGTON. July 10.—Prohibition enforcement moved with increased activity during the treasury department's final twelve months in charge of administration of the dry law', figures made public by the treasury showed today. During the year ended July 1, h?n prohibition enforcement was transferred to the justice department. 68.186 persons were arrested for alleged violations of the Volstead act. This is near anew record, exceeding by nearly 1.300 the figure for the previous year, when 66,873 arrests were made. The number of stills seized during the period increased by more than 7.(XX). During the year just ended. 24.373 were seized, as compared with 17,146 the year before. Most of these were found in the southeastern states, for many years the largest center of operations for illicit distilleries. The district embracing Virginia and the Carolinas reported the largest number of still seizures, with 427. The treasury also reported seizure during the wear of 8.773 automobiles allegedly used in tran porting liquor. BAND TO GIVE CONCERT Arndt Musicians Slated in Program at Camp Sullivan. RKO vaudeville acts featuring Mile. Rhea, noted dance star, and Santoro Company presenting a revue of music, song and dance named “Divertissements of Vaudeville.” Winchester and Ross offer a unique brand of comedy which is labeled “Wise and Otherwise.” A novel and original travesty called “A Cyclone from the West” is the comedy offering of Bill Kirk and Grace Lawrence. Other theaters today offer: Pat Lane at the Lyric; Larry Rich at the Indiana, “Golden Dawn” at the Apollo. “One Romantic Night” at the Palace. “Sweethearts and Wives” at the Circle, “True to the Navy” at the Ohio, and burlesque at the Colonial.

WOMAN DROWNS IN WHITC RIVER Wades Beyond Depth; Death Fourth of Season. Stepping into a deep hole in White rivet, Mrs. Louise Calkins, 33, of 718 North Denny street, was drowned Wednesday afternoon at Terrace beach. Mrs. Calkins’ death boosted the drowning toll in Indianapolis to four persons. Unable to swim, Mrs. Calkins was wading across the river, accompanied by her cousin, Frank Wysong, 26. of 418 North Denny street. Both stepped into deep water and Wysong grabbed Mrs. Calkins, but was unable to retain his hold. He then grasped her hair, but was unable to keep Mrs. Calkins above the water. Russell Calkins, husband of Mrs. Calkins, and their children, Vere Jean, 8, and Dorothy, saw the tragedy from the river bank and were prostrated with grief. Mrs. Calkins’ body was recovered an hour after the tragedy by Pierce Gype, Terrace beach, and George McGerity, 1223 Harvey street. Motorist Killed MODOC, Ind., July 10.—Lawrence Fraze, 25, son of Marshal Fraze, a farmer, near Modcc, was instantly killed Wednesday night when he drove his automobile against the eivlne of a Big Four passenger train at a crossing two miles east of here. He had been assisting with work at a neighboring farm and was returning home. The car was demolished.
