HINES ON VETERANS JOB Bv Unitnl Prrti WASHINGTON. July B.—Director of Veterans Bureau, Brigadier-Gen-eral Frank T. Hines, has been appointed administrator of veterans' affairs under the new law consolidating the various government agencies for veterans under the bureau. President Hoover announced teday. Hines will direct reorganization to consolidate the veterans' bureau, the pensions bureau and the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. TECHNICIANS OF STUDIOS CREATE NEAR MIRACLES Movie Engineers Perform Scenic Feats Verging on Impossible. HOLLYWOOD, July 8 —While the caprices of the stars are recorded in bold headlines. ?,r r ' the habits of the lowly extras are recorded at length in th* public prints, the most interesting phase of motion picture production is unheralded and unsung. The amazing work of the technicians who create raging snowstorms in a semi-tropical climate, build huge ships that run on tracks twenty miles from the ocean, and construct bottles of paraffine that look exactly like the real article, but may be broken over th* head without damage to the ’atter, is seldom told. Once in a while these unusual feats do get recognition, as in the ca~~ of the parting of the Red Sea for “The Ten Commandments.” the lofty climbing of Harold Lloyd in "Safety Last” and the flood in “Noah’s Ark.” Just as difficult technical miracle- are performed in Hollywood every week. It was necessary to re-enact snow scenes for “River's End,” the James Oliver Curwood story of the north woods, now being mr-'e by Warner Bros. The snow had gone at Truckee, where the scenes originally were made. On a single stage at the studio the terrain of the high Sierras was reproduced in minute detail and the scenes made. Those who see the picture will never know the difference. The city of London was built in its entirety for “The Sky Hawks,” a Fox picture. It was built in a huge government hangar, with the principal buildings reproduced in accurate detail-just to be blown to bits. Similar citie- were built for “The Dawn Patrol” the air picture starring Richard Barthelmess at First National. The ship which John Barrymore used in his “Moby Dick” was copied at W* ph studios in Hollywood, twenty miles from the ocean, for close up scenes. It was on a track and operated by motors in the midst of an artificial lake. The advatnage of building snow scenes, sea sc.nes, etc., at the studio lies in the fact thet light, tides and weather may be “eontroled,” resulting in near perfect pictures.
