SCIENTISTS SEE TINIEST GERM FOR FIRST TIME Creeping Paralysis Organism Is Isolated, Paves Way for Conquest. 3o pvrtght. 19JO. tor Science Service) NEW YORK. July 7.—Men and women of science working patiently together in the small, obscure neurological laboratory of the Westminster hospital in London, England. claim to have discovered the smallest disease germ ever seen by the human eye. In doing so they believe they have paved the way to the conquest of some of the most mysterious an* terrible diseases afflicting mankind. The organism they declare they have isolated, identified and photographed is thought to be that of multiple scleroses —commonly called “creeping paralysis"—once a rare disease in this country, but now not at all uncommon. Can Pass Through Porcelain The germ is one of a group known as the Alterable viruses, which are so minute they will pass through a porcelain Alter, which catches all hitherto discovered organisms. Hitherto, these have remained invisible even under the most powerful microscopes. They include the forms of parasitic life causing infantile paralysis, encephalitis (sleeping sickness;, measles, smallpox, and some of the most deadly diseases of animals, uch as distemper among dogs and pleuro-pneu-monja among cattle. This information is vouched for by Dr. Fo6ter Kennedy, professor of neurology at the Cornell University Medical school and attending physician in charge of nervous diseases at Bellevue hospital. New York City. He returned from abroad a few days ago after carefully reviewing the work done in the Westminster hospital laboratory. Some of the leading physicians in New York City, when told of Dr. Kennedy's report, said such an announcement from a physician less distinguished than Dr. Kennedy would be regarded skeptically, but that his guarded and quallfled statement must be given the most serious consideration. Further research, according to Dr. Kennedy, will be required to confirm the discovery. He was reluctant at this time to allow any announcement to be made publicly.

DUraK Fairly Common "Creeping paralysis” some years •go was considered a rarity in America, Dr. Kennedy explained. Today it is fairly common. At almost any time a half-dozen cases can be found in the wards of Bellevue hospital. Its most m rked symptom is a progressive ..lability to walk. It is characterized by episodes of weakness, weaker each time until paralyzed Yet, a patient rarely dies of the disease. Dr. Kennedy says he has personally seen only two deaths that apeared to be directly due to it. A patient may be virtually helpless over a long course of years. Strangely, blond, blue-eyed people seem to be most susceptible. It also seems to be selective as to age. Dr. Kennedy says he has never seen a case ina person less than 16, and very rarely after 40. SMOOTS TO WASHINGTON Honeymooners Abandon Plans for Honolulu Trip Temporarily. Bu United Prens SALT LAKE CITY, July 7.—Plans for a honeymoon to Honolulu were abandoned temporarily by Senator and Mrs. Reed Smoot today. They made hurried preparations to leave for Washington in response to a telegram from President Hoover asking the Utah senator to attend the special senate sess.on to consider the London naval treaty. The Smoots were married on last Wednesday. They had planned to leave for San Francisco in a few days and to board a ship for the Hawaiian islands, DROP SEARCH FOR FLIER Air Line Abandons Hope of Finding Long Missing Mail Pilot. Bu United Pre iJO S ANGELES. July 7.—A1l hope o' finding Maury Graham, missing air mail pilot, has been abandoned, it was declared today by Jimmy James, official of the Western Air Express. Grahams wrecked plane, its valuable cargo intact, was found two weeks ago in the mountains near Cedar City. Utah and since then an organized hunt has been made for the pilot or his body. James expressed the belief that Graham s body eventually would be found by sheepherders or hunters. Little hope is held that Graham is alive, he said. 'U. S. AGAINST SALE OF PLANES TO SOVIET Disapproval Coats Aircraft Finns Heavily in Businas*. July 7.—The recent suggestion of the United States department against exporting airplanes to the Soviet union was believed today already to have cost the American airplane industry large sums. It was learned that Francis Love, representative of the American Aircraft Corporation, arrived here en route to Moscow, where he expected to get large orders, but cancelled his trip to Rusisa after the state departmnet advised the Glenn Martin Company at Baltiihore against selling bombing planes to the Soviet. The Soviet airplane purchasing program envisages expenditures of many millions of dollars, and anew Russian order recently was placed with the German airplane industry.

DOUBTS SUICIDE, RIGHT VERDICT IN RADIO CASE Coroner Points to Absence of Powder Burns on Mrs. Dazey. Investigation of the death of Mrs. Josie Dazey, 39, of 927 North Bradley avenue, Friday, was renewed today by Coroner C. H. Keever, who declared absence of powder burns led him to doubt whether she committed suicide. Her body was found in a corridor of the Dazey home early Friday morning after a shot awakened her husband, Grant Dazey, and her 15-year-old daughter, Juanita. She died a few minutes later, from a bullet wound in the right temple. Detectives William Feeney and Arthur Fields this morning were assigned to the investigation, and said they will question the daughter today. Brooded Over Suit Mrs. Dazey was believed to have shot herself after brooding over a recent radio court suit, in which neighbors sought an injunction against continual loud playing of the Dazey radio. She often told her husband she was “being hypnotized,” he declared to police. When awakened by the shot and a falling body, Dazey said, he sent his daughter to a neighbor’s home to summon a physician and police. Found Revolver Meanwhile he sought the source of the shot and found his own revolver lying on the floor near his wife. He broke open the chamber and extracted four unfired and one fired cartridges, and threw them, with the gun, beneath a dresser, he said. Dazey told Coroner Keever he tampered with the revolver to ascertain whether Mrs. Dazey shot herself with the revolver, or had been struck by a bullet from another gun. The coroner indicated he will return no verdict until the investigation is completed. •
