15 BALLOONS TO START TODAY IN NATIONAL RACE Perfect Weather Reported for Beginning of Dish at Houston. By Unitrd />rc* HOUSTON, Tex. July 4.— Perfect weather conditions today greeted fifteen balloonists, several of them internationally known, who were scheduled to take off at 4 p. m. in the national balloon races. The huge bags are expected to be carried by gulf breves toward Colorado, from where they may be borne eastward by prevailing winds. Unexplored air currents, however, may carry them far off the predicted courses. Or-e In the air. the two-man crew’s will control their crafts as best they can be means of ballast and gas. They will endeavor to rema'- aloft until carried as far as possible from the starting point. First to take off will be Lieut. T. G. W. Settle, pilot, and Lieut. R. G. Mayer, his assistant, of the United States navy. They will be followed by H. E. Honeywell, 61-year-old balloonist of St. Louis, who has made more th-n 500 ascensions. The winner of the race will qualify for entrance in the international Gordon Bennett cup race as United States representative. Colonel Roberto Fierro, famous Mexican pilot, will be one of the spectators. The other entrants, in order of their takeoff: Lieutenants W. D. Blue and J. P. Kid well. Army; S. T. The girl who supports herself in San Francisco can live “decently and respectably" on sl2 to sl4 a week and some actually put money in the bank on sl6 a week, according to Mrs. Ruby Brooks Nikirk, director oi the personal service bureau of the Y. W. C. A. Rooms may be had for sls to $25 a month and rourishing meals may be bought for $1 to $1.25 a day, clothes cost $lO a month while $2 should go for cosmetics and $3 more for recreation.
