LINGLE MURDER SEARCH SPREAD ACROSS NATION Developments Link, Moran Gang More Closely With Slaying. By f nit rtf Prrnn CHICAGO, July 4.—lnvestigation ©I the subway murder of Alfred • Jake > Lingle had swept across a continent today and the bullet which sent him to his death was taikng rank with "The shot that Was heard around the world.” In Los Angeles, Detroit, Boston, Canada and here, echoes of the Lingle case were heard as the investigators forged steadily ahead in their efforts to track down the assassin. Wherever there were gang activities, it semed, they appeared connected in some way with the •übway killing. . Most important, perhaps, of the i recent hour developments in the P gangland warfare that has followed the death of the reporter, was the Slaying at Detroit late Thursday of two Chicago beer runners and the serious wounding of another. Slain in Detroit William Cannon and George ColJins, known associates of the "Bugs” Moran gang of Chicago, were murdered as they sat in an automobile in Detroit. Mike Stitzel, Detroit, who was with them, was shot three times and also may die. Development after development here within the last few days has linked the Moran gang more and more closely with the killing of the $65-a-week newspaper man, whose racketeering activities are said to have netted him a “side” income of almost $60,000 a year. These developments, the friendship between Cannon and Collins and the Morans, and the fact that Cannon and Collins left here shortly after Lingle was slain, led police to suspect that their deaths might be conencted in some way with the Lingle case. Fails in Jail Break In Los Angeles, a Moran gangster, G“orge Davis, failed late j Thursday in a bold attempt to escape from the city jail, where he was held with Frank Foster and bther Chicagoans wanted for questioning in the Lingle murder. Davis also was believed to be wanted in Detroit for a killing tnere. A victory was scored here by the reorganized police department, which was ‘ shaken up” during'the furore that immediately followed Lingle's death. “Machine Gun” Jack McGurn, said by police to be "Scarface Al” j Capone’s most efficient killer, re- , ceived the fame fate that his j Chieftain was given in Phtladel- j phia more than a year ago, when I lie was sentenced to spend a year in jail for conviction of carrying a gun. ‘ ' McGurn s plea for anew trial was denied, but he obtained his release uuder SIO,OOO bond, pending appeal anotherTrrested in GARY VOTE FRAUD CASE Politician Taken Into Custody After Accusation on Stand. By I'nitrd Prctt • CROWN POINT. Ind., July 4. The conspiracy trial of Owen O'Mala and Joseph Carlson, in criminal court here, was in recess today following a session Thursday in which witnesses described alleged fraudulent activities in connection with the primary election at Gary May 6. One of the chief developments was arrest of John C. Mullen, Gary politician, as a conspirator in the election frauds. He was released on $5,000 bond and will be called for trial next fall. Witnesses included Andrew’ Choka and Joseph O’Bara. Both testified they had brought several automobile loads of "floater” votes to Gary and were paid off in Chicago by Carlson. MOTHER CHAINS YOUTH TO CHAIR FOR 3 YEARS Explains Lad Forgot to Come Home If Given Chance to Roam. Bu United Prrt s NEW LONDON, Conn., July 4. Child welfare agencies were interested today in the strange case of a 12-year-old New London boy who has been chained and padlocked to a chair every day for three years, with the exception of the hours he slept or attended school. The boy is Clifford Dunmire. His mother, Mrs. Anna Dunmire, a widow, revealed the chaining when she asked Boy Scout officials to take Clifford to a summer camp. The mother explained the boy neglected to come home when he was allowed to roam after school hours. He did not object to the chaining, she said, and came home promptly after school every day to take his place in the chair. A Scout executive found Clifford bound to the chair when he visited the Dunmire home. The boy seemed not to mind his confinement and quite proudly exhibited his skill in moving about w’ith the chair. • As an experiment Ore boy was released. After he had been away from home for about five hours he was found watching boys setting off fireworks. He said he had forgotten to come home.
