Gala Opening “Riley Swimming Pool” Greenfield, Ind., July 4

$30,000 POOL IN GREENFIELD IS ‘LAST WORD' Swimming Center Modern in Every Respect and Well Lighted. MODERNITY! This word, spelled in capital letters, typifies the construction of the new *30,000 swimming pool in Riley park, Greenfield. Prom shower-faucet to diving board, the new pool will present on its opening the last word in the kingdom of aquatic sports. Excavation work on the pool began in March under the Wesley Bintz patent of Lansing, Mich., with the Edward F. Smith Company, Indianapolis, as contractors, and the Foster Engineering Service Company, Indianapolis, supervising the masonry and excavation. On a hilllock in Riley park the contractors excavated a ditch which now holds a swimming pool of concrete material, 120 feet long and 60 feet in width. Built on Concourse Plan The pool was built on tlie concourse plan, with locker rooms housed In a brick building erected in conjunction with the pool. Entrance to the pool for swimmers is gained by walking upstairs from the locker rooms to the water level of the pool. A three-foot concrete wall guards the swimmers from spectators around; the oval pool, while a fence separates visitors to the shelter house from the pool’s promenade. With thought for the kindergartners, the park board of Greenfield incorporated a wading pool in connection with the large oval. The depth of the oval from “mudcrawling” to “high-diving is from 3 to 9 feet. Pool Well Lighted Fifteen lights surround the aquatic course, to bring daylight comfort for night swimming. The pool, filled, holds 275,000 gallons of water. The contractors stressed cleanli-

ness in erecting the “sub” for the “old swimmin’ hole” by installation of a cholrinating and filter system that changes the water every fifteen hours. Greenfield contractors and business firms played an important part in furnishing material for the new home of the addicts of the Australian crawl. One thousand barrels of cement used in the pool’s construction was furnished by the Broadway Lumber Company. The 300 square yards of sand and gravel necessary for the concrete was contracted for from Ray Hooton, Greenfield. Thirty Men Get Work Thirty men were employed in the pool's construction. Other firms, and the products they supplied, are: Detroit Steel Products, steel sash; Foster Lumber Company. Bu United Press PARIS, July 2.—Cardinal Verdier, new archbishop of Paris, worried by the rapid expansion of the cocktail habit, has ordered his ecclesiastical aids to make an extensive survey, to permit him to decide whether intervention is necessary. Although France claims to be the land of birth of the cocktail, it never was drunk in quantities until recent years, and has now entirely supplanted teas and wines as an afternoon beverage in all classes of society. The Academy of Medicine has figured that Paris drinks 1,000 cocktails a person annually, double the capacity of either New York or London.

AMERICAN BAR TO TAKE SECRET DRY UW POLL Attitude of 30,000 U. S. Lawyers Toward Repeal to Be Learned. Bu Vnitnt Prct* NEW YORK, July 2.—The American Bar Association will begin a secret poll in two weeks among its 30,000 lawyer members throughout the country to determine their attitude toward repeal of the eighteenth amendment. Decision to undertake the poll was made after twelve years of aloofness from the prohibition controversy. The executive committee of the association said it no longer could resist pressure from within the membership ranks for an expression of opinion on the subject. For some time one wing of the association, called the Voluntary Committee of Lawyers, has been urging the association to go or. record either for or against the amendment. An attempt of this sort was made at the last convention, in Memphis, and at previous gatherings, but the executive committee, on each occasion, prevented a direct vote or referendum on the plea that prohibition was a controversial and political subject and that only a relatively small number of members were on hand to vote. For that reason it has been decided, in conducting the coming poll, to allow the members as a whole to say whether the vote should be made public.
