WETS’ FIGURES BRANDED LIES CHIEF Anti-Saloon Leader Says Jails Not Crowded in Statement. Claiming that the number of prisoners in Indiana Jails May 31, 1930, had increased only twentythree over the number on the same date in 1920, Ethan A. Miles, Indiana Anti-Saloon League attorney, today declared in a statement that arguments of “wets" are “flagrant lies.’* The statement reads: “Those who publicly have been advocating repeal of the prohibition |aws and particularly the politicians ■who have been crying for more liquor and for more privileges of buying liquor, have had a great deal to say recently about the great increase in crime under prohibition find one of their stock arguments is that the Jails are overcrowded. “The writer took pains recently to write to all the sheriffs of Indiana for the number of prisoners in jails on May 31, 1930. Replies received trom fifty-seven sheriffs show that there never was a more flagrant lie put out than these statements about overcrowded jails.” Miles’ figures shows an increase of 300,000 in population and of but twenty-three in jail population on the date. The figure does not inclue state prison populations. PARK POOL REOPENED Garfield Tank’s Chlorination System Is Adjusted. Garfield Park swimminj pool was open again today after closing for three hours Thursday for adjust-1 ing of the new chlorination system. The system is working satisfactorily, according to Charles Sallee, park superintendent.
