CAPTURE FOUR AS SUSPECTS IN FATAL SHOOTING Alleged Holdup Man Is Nabbed by Captain at Gas Station. Fatal shooting of Sam Smith, Standard filling station attendant at the Emrlchsville station Aug. 27, 1929, will be solved, police declared today, by arrest of four youths on auto banditry and robbery charges. Police Captain Otto Ray of the city license bureau, captured one of the trio, Bennie De Witt, 23, of 1844 Sharon street, Monday night and alleges De Witt was in the act of holding up a filling station at Eleventh and Pennsylvania streets. Five minutes previously, it is alleged, De Witt had robbed a Standard filling station at Sixteenth and Illinois streets of $45. Arrest of Louis R. Bridget, 25, of 1540 Shepard street; Fred Minkner, 27, of 2301 Barrett street, and John Lucas, 28, followed De Witt's capture. The four participated in scores of holdups and robberies in and near the city, police assert and one member of the trio has been connected with the Enricksville shooting they claim. Captain Ray was passing the Shell filling station at Eleventh and Pennsylvania streets Monday night and saw Fred Fugazzi, attendant, struggling inside with De Witt. De witt had dropped his revolver in the struggle with Fugazzi. Armed. Captain Ray captured De Witt. Ernest Warnock, 26, of 2434 College avenue, identified De Witt as the bandit who held him up five five minutes before De Witt’s capture. The four are not the bandits who have looted ten groceries in daylight robberies recently, police said today. Earl McFarland of 1456 South Illinois street, manager of a Standard grocery at 2814 Shelby street, and Frank Fechtman, 918 Bradbury street, clerk, viewed the three, but declared they were not the bandits who took $240 cash, two wrist watches, a revolver and McFarland’s car in a holdup of the grocery Monday afternoon. McFarland and Fetchman were forced into a rear room and locked in by the bandit trio.

WONDERFUL POLICE DOG IS A BIG HIT ‘Dauntless,’ Who Has Supported Great Actors on the Screen, Is Now on a Vaudeville Tour of the Country. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN HAVING a weakness for police dogs, it is not surprising that I start telling you about Dauntless, a wonderful police dog now in vaudeville. Regardless of my weakness, you will agree with me that Dauntless is about the best trained German police dog in the business. Many times I have been impressed that some trained dogs just naturally caught on to a certain routine and went through the act from a sense of habit. Not so with this dog.

His trainer gives him so many commands and so rapidly that no dog could catch on to the routine. One remarkable thing about Dauntless is that he knows left from right and his master proves that beyond

any do ub t. The dog’s trick of disarming his master as he fires blanks at him is a great stunt. Here is a real police dog, wonderfully trained. A treat for adults as well as children. Stepanoff has an elaborate dance, song and sketch revue. It is built along the Russian idea. A travesty upon a long skirt dance is mighty good. Talent in

this act. Sid Lewis nas calmed down on noise. It helps his act. Has the assistance of a "plant” in the audience. As usual, stops the show with laughs. To be perfectly frank, I never have cared for the work of this man. His popularity proves that my taste is not in the majority. But the man wins. Happy and Joy go in for some good melody and some mighty punk comedy. The movie feature is "Born Reckless,” a story of gang life as the author s*es it. Frightfully theatrical, but full of thrills. Will hold your interest. Edmund Lowe is the chief gangster. Now at the Lyric. Other theaters today offer “The Golden Calf,” at the Lyric; "Devil’s Holiday," at the Indiana; “Journey’s End,” at the Circle; “In Gay Madrid,” at the Palace; “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” at the Ohio, and burlesque at the Colonial.
