BRIGHTEN YOUR CORNER; LAMPS MAKEIT EASY New Lighting Equipment Makes the Home Joy to Behold. Bv SEA Service NEW YORK. June 11.—If you would brighten the corner where you are in truly modern manner, you will welcome the aid of contemporary art in lighting your home. One of the outstanding features of modern lighting is • its blessed indirectness. Diffused or concealed lights, in the new contemporary effects, give a uniform glow to a room that is pleasing, artistic, approximate the eveness of daylight or sunlight and eliminate old-fash-ioned glare that was so hard on one’s eyes, not to mention one's appearance. In addition to the novel forms of illumination that our modems are building into the panels of rooms, the mirrors of dressing tables, the ceilings of new rooms, there are multitudinous lamps available to those who want to go modem with a grain of salt, not tee-totally. Modernistic movable lamps range from the severely functional to the most unusual decorative effects. They should be chosen, however, with regard to the room which they will occupy, and their uses. One of their particularly gratifying characteristics is their diversified types. You can find a modern lamp for practically any spot you want illuminated that has been designed with some such use in mind. There are modem bedside lamps for the adult and the child. One of the most unusual of these is the twin-bed lamp, with one side of its shade a mellow yellow parchment, the other half black so that the occupant of one bed may read without bothering the other. Hiere are lamps for pianos, for

mantels, for library tables, for halls, for reading, for bridge, for dark comers, for the cozy lounging davenport in front of the cheery fire. The architectural lines of these new lamps are intriguing. So are the materials that go into them. Brass, aluminum, synthetic alabaster and other stones, nickel and other metals are the main media, and glass, formica and rubber are used with them. A combination of dull and lustrous surfaces is a favorite with modems and through using both some fascinating effects have been obtained. shades reminding one of a big shaving partially unrolled. The base is polished brass, in a built-up design. For the children’s bedside, a little lamp, with a pointed conical shade in any color one wants, looks quite like a makebelieve Christmas tree. For a woman’s desk, a low lamp of polished brass, with gold parchment shades laced with metal, has its cylindrical shade made with modernistic set-backs. A stunning desk lamp for a man’s study is conservative black and silver, made of metal, hard rubber in some new composition and black glass. It has its bulbs enclosed and has

,the most obliging shade, attached so that it can be revolved, tipped any way one wishes or kept upright. The new floor lamps rise to their height like slim shafts to flower out at the top into lovely shades that give pleasing indirect light. One of these good for bridge has a triple effect, in apricot parchment, on a brass base, very effective in a room done in the new soft tans and apricot tones. Another floor lamp looks like a flaring, very tall vase, for its fivesided shade of colored glass is very narrow at the bottom and wide at the top.

BARE BEDROOM IS COOLER THAN CLUTTERED ONE Light, Bright Colors Help in Taking Away Air of Stuffiness. The easiest way to obtain coolness or the appearance of it, in the bedroom is to make the furnishings and decorations as simple as possible. For some reason “cold and bare” go together. The bedroom which is 6imply decorated for the hot summer months does not necessarily have to look bare. It need only not look cluttered, fussy or over-dressed. -There need be no hard, distressing plainness in the furnishings. Colonial and early American furniture, because of their simplicity of line and decoration, are excellent for the summer bedroom. There is something about maple which looks cool, and just to have things appear cool is of great importance on hot days. The upholstery material of the boudoir chair may be a means of giving the summer bedroom the desired appearance of coolness. The light, bright colors give a lightness to the room which helps to make it cool. The glazed chintzes are especially cool to look at and to touch, and their smooth surfaces on the chairs, on the dressing table skirt and in the draperies help to bring down the temperature of the sleeping room. The bric-a-brac which adorned the bedroom ajl winter might be carefully packed away for the summer and its place taken by other pieces, fewer in number and lighter in design, or the surfaces simply left bare of ornament.
