COOLNESS AND COMFORT ARE SUMMERNEEDS Porch, Sunroom, Garden, Can Be Made Havens in Hot Months. Comfort for the family deserves Just as much consideration during the summer months as it does in the dead of winter. The thoughtful home maker will seek to capture coolness in June, July, and August Just as she attempts to gain warmth and cheer for her family in winter. Comfort combined with coolness is the only real comfort for the warm days. Every one likes to lounge in summer just as much as on a long winter evening, but lounging in a heavy overstaffed chair is not solid summer comfort However, summer comfort does not imply a lack of soft cushions and easy chairs which admit of reclining, any more than it implies the hard unyielding porch furniture of a few years ago. For the porch, sunroom or garden which would capture the coolness and comfort so desirable in summer, there should be several arm chairs, one or two peacock or hour-glass chairs—they are exceedingly decorative and give the porch quite a smart appearance—several small tables and one large one, lamps where they will do the most good, and a desk for any one sufficiently ambitious to write a letter on a hot day The accessory pieces for the porch can be attractive and useful. The smoking stands may be of the brightest colors, in the most striking combinations. Tea tables and coffee tables add to the'informal charm of the porch which has become a living room, and plant stands are a necessary part of the furnishings. The use of color out-of-doors

Bedroom Made Cheery
Draperies of cretonne and furniture of straight lines help to make the bedroom attractive on a warm night. Some of the ornaments used all winter might be put away for a few weeks. This will not only make the room seem different but will actually add to its appearance of coolness.
offers many more opportunities than it does in-doors. Within the house care must be taken not to have the decorative colors too bright, or the contrasts too striking, but the natural light of the out-doors nullifies a great deal of the brightness of the colors and allows for use of more pronounced contrasts than are permissible inside. Every one wants the sunporch, the porch or the garden furniture and decoration to look as cool and as different as possible from the inside furnishings. Green comes naturally to mind when considering possible dominant colors to be made the foundation of , color scheme. Green always looks
cool, makes every one feel cool, and is the color of the out-doors. Care must be taken in the shade of green selected for the out-door furniture and upholstery material. There is an almost unlimited number of shades of green but all of them are not attractive when used outdoors. Grass green, contrary to what seems natural, is not a good shade to use outside. A green in which there is a great deal of blue or a great deal of yellow will make a much more attractive color scheme for the porch. Whether a yellow-green or a bluegreen is selected will govern the choice of other colors to complete the color plan.

COMMON SENSE VITAL IN BUYING OF FURNITURE Good Taste and Judgment Will Make Home More Livable Place. All that is necessary to achieve an attractively furnished home is to combine good taste and common sense in selection of the things to go in it. Common sense will lead the homemaker, whether furnishing the home throughout or just adding a few pieces, to remember that the purpose of the home is to serve the needs of the members of the family. It is vhe convenience of those who live in the home which should be considered first of all in the furniture. The family in which there are several small children will have needs in furniture very different from those of the family consisting of a mature couple. Not only the number of persons in the household will govern the choice of furniture for it, but their ages and their tastes and their occupations, will be important factors. Good taste will direct the housekeeper to bring into her home objects of furniture which not only will be useful and convenient for her particular family, but which will also be attractive enough to prove an inspiration and pleasure to them. Often in the home the very fact that some piece of furniture or decoration is ugly or of an unpleasing color mars its usefulness. The members of the family will avoid an ugly chair, and an unattractive table is pushed aside. Put Springs on Doors It is a small expenditure and a worth-while one to see that every door has its spring, when summer comes. Adults are quite as likely to leave screen doors ajar as children.
